Merger
[edit]Argos'Dad has proposed a multiple merge of short articles on small Salamis villages into Salamis Island for reasons 3 and 4 from WP:Merge (i.e. "very short and is unlikely to be expanded within a reasonable amount of time" and "requires the background material or context from a broader article in order for readers to understand it").
This list in question is Aianteio, Agios Georgios, Salamis, Ampelakia, Batsi, Kaki Vigla, Kanakia, Salamis, Kolones, Salamis, Kynosoura, Paloukia, Perani, Salamis, Peristeria, Salamis, Psili Ammos, Saterli, Salamis, Selinia, Steno, Salamis, Vasilika, Salamis, Xeno, Salamis.
Discussion so far from Talk:Ampelakia and pertaining initially to Ampelakia:
- Against Ampelakia and Salamis Island are two different entities. Ampelakia is a city/municipality on Salamis Islands, and Salamis Island is an island. You can't merge those two together. El Greco (talk · contribs) 14:31, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Well, this may be an exception to the merger proposals I have made for all the villages on Salamis. Here is my concern: I doubt there are any sources that provide information about Ampelakia, thus this stub will never be sourced or expanded. El Greco, if I am wrong, I will happily agree with you as we have the same goals to expand the articles about Greece.Argos'Dad 15:02, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Now that I have looked into it a little more. The other pages, that float954 created are just villages on the island, Ampelakia is an actual city/municipality. So those other pages (villages) can be merged onto the Salamis Island page, but Ampelakia can stay. It was actually here long before float954 came around. But, I also agree with you on that fact that I too doubt, there are any sources that provide information about Ampelakia. El Greco (talk · contribs) 14:47, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed re keeping Ampelakia separate. The rest certainly don't seem likely to have sources (unless someone can find Greek ones) and once the unsourced cruft is cleared out, they'd fit pretty compactly into a general geographical roundup within Salamis Island. Maybe it'd be more useful to take this merge discussion to Talk:Salamis Island. As you know, the float954 (etc) disruption is extending to removing the merge tag from all the individual articles Argos'Dad nominated. Gordonofcartoon 23:47, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
- I support El Greco's viewpoint, but disagree with him on one point. Those of you who can read Greek could possibly find some useful information regarding Ampelákia at this link. Why don't we have a separate article for Salamís Municipality? Is it because most people think that it is synonymous with the island? Backspace 10:00, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

- Support the merge, keeping Ampelakia separate, per above. Katherine Tredwell 03:54, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
References
[edit]I've removed the unreferenced tag; I think it's adequate now, with a just a few specific sections left. Does anyone here read Greek? The Anatropes newspaper site has what looks a good general article (see [1]) that could be useful for filling in background, as well as a history page. Gordonofcartoon 10:23, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- I do, and will look at Anatropes. My father has a print book from the 70s with some info, I will get and incorporate.Argos'Dad 13:49, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I can read enough to see what a page is about and extract basics like a list of swimming beaches, but that's about it. The ancient location of Salamina, more to the east, would be worth mentioning, and the later history looks quite interesting: Venetian wars etc. Gordonofcartoon 15:06, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Newspaper/magazine titles
[edit]List is sourced at the official website [2] - but can someone check the translations? "Tippings" looks odd: is "Inversions" more accurate? Plus it looks a selective list, mostly of monthlies: surely they have daily papers too? Gordonofcartoon 17:29, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
Education section
[edit]Provide references for the info contained in this part of the article. How in the world can one know for sure if the students are "proficient"? Are the pupils of the island some kind of prodigies in comparison to other parts of Greece? Pel thal (talk) 11:32, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Assessment comment
[edit]The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Salamis Island/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.
==Improving status== This article will have long-term problems in reaching Class B, since its dominant contributor is not providing references, has repeatedly removed {{unreferenced}} tags, and refuses all communication on the matter. Gordonofcartoon 10:33, 27 August 2007 (UTC) |

Salamis Island → Salamina Island – It has now become apparent that the most common name in English is Salamina Island.
Below a list of relevant references for your convenience:

- Oppose. Native English-language sources, especially in terms of long-term notability, clearly favour Salamis. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:08, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- Comment Is there a split in usage between Salamis in ancient contexts and Salamina in modern contexts? — Ceso femmuin mbolgaig mbung, mellohi! (投稿) 20:07, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes. Salamis is used in ancient contexts. Salamina is the predominant English name when referring to present time. Weatherextremes (talk) 17:18, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. Bringing sources from Greece, that use the transliterated modern Greek name for obvious reasons (leaving aside that electoral lists and weather stations are not exactly the most visible e-resources out there), is not evidence for the usage in the English-speaking world. Constantine ✍ 12:50, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
- Comment Could someone then provide a list of sources that actually proves the most common usage in English is Salamis? I provided exactly the same sources for the Elefsina article renaming and the sources were enough to lead to the renaming of the page from the completely irrelevant in modern English Elefsis. I doubt anyone uses in modern English the name Salamis instead of Salamina when they visit the island. The question here is whether the diglosia issue which has been a cancer of Greek society for ever will spill out in English wiki. That issue was settled in the 80s and modern Greek prevailed over archaic conventions Weatherextremes (talk) 00:38, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
- Except we are at the English WP, and Greek diglossia has nothing to do with this. The island is best known because of a certain battle, and the common name derives from it, regardless of what modern Greeks call it. Google Ngrams is a typical way to measure this: Salamis vs. Salamina, Salamis Island vs. Salamina Island. Constantine ✍ 13:02, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
