– It seems to me the common name of Rusa is the sambar deer just reading all the species articles. Currently that title is held by only one species R. unicolor which doesn't make any sense to me. I recommend also moving Philippine deer to Philippine sambar and Javan rusa to Sunda sambar for consistency. The problem is where to move R. unicolor, as the name Mainland sambar doesn't seem too apt as it's found in Indonesia (beyond the Asian mainland)   User:Dunkleosteus77 |push to talk  00:21, 18 July 2021 (UTC) Relisting. Jack Frost (talk) 00:48, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Sambar deer titles a page with significant content and so is ineligible to be a target "new" title in a move request unless it is also included to be renamed. This request has been altered to reflect that fact. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 03:50, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. Javan rusa receives over twice as many ghits as Sunda sambar (and most of the latter are to pages that say "an alternative name for the Javan rusa is...") so per WP:COMMONNAME, I would suggest keeping that as is, since it's the best-known name. The same is true, although to a lesser extent, for the Philippine deer. Mainland sambar seems to be almost totally unknown as a name (22 ghits, some of which put it in quote marks, implying it isn't a real name) so I don't think we can use that. The correct common English name for R. unicolor, according to all the sources I can find, appears to be either sambar deer or just "sambar", so I think we should keep that as is, too. Which leaves no grounds to move the genus page to its less common, and in my opinion, potentially confusing, name either. Anaxial (talk) 07:56, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I imagine Java rusa gets more hits because when other articles link to it, they avoid the redirect   User:Dunkleosteus77 |push to talk  00:41, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the Google hits ("ghits") aren't to Wikipedia, so I don't think that's it. Anaxial (talk) 05:30, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
