Union

[edit]

I don't get why we are listing the "union" or club for each player. This made sense in the past, in the amateur era of sevens, when sevens players were loaned from their clubs. And it makes sense for international 15s, where players spend more time with their club than on international duty. But in the Olympic era of sevens, almost all of the 12 qualified teams have professional sevens setups with the player contracted by the national union, so club affiliation is largely meaningless. (Plus it generates a mess of distracting flags). CUA 27 (talk) 20:52, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree here. I think the listing of the 12 + alternate and their position is more than sufficient. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 21:10, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think maybe you're right about removing the union affiliation section to remove distracting flags and other mess. However, to keep things tidy the previous squad pages regarding this would need to be adjusted as well don't you think? Kidsoljah (talk) 05:44, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both for weighing in. And an ever bigger thank you for all the work you are both doing on this page. I've taken care of removing the unions & flags for this page. In terms of other pages, it would be good for consistency if someone wanted to remove unions & flags for rugby sevens in the Olympic era (i.e., 2012 to the present). Before the Olympic era and professionalization of sevens, unions did matter, so I would lean towards leaving unions in place for pre-2012 articles. I'm certainly open to other ideas.
