David Cross quote
[edit]I am continuing this discussion on the talk page rather than violate the three-revert rule.
Thank you NE2 for pointing out Wikipedia:Profanity. That's the first time I have seen that guideline (why in the world is it not linked off of the main Manual of Style page?). I now understand how that guideline applies if using the direct quote, and if the exact quote stays I agree it should remain unedited. However, I disagree with using the quote at all.
Including the David Cross quote goes against Wikipedia's NPOV policy with respect to undue weight. Specifically, "[i]f a viewpoint is held by an extremely small (or vastly limited) minority, it does not belong in Wikipedia (except perhaps in some ancillary article) regardless of whether it is true or not; and regardless of whether you can prove it or not."
Also, available demographic data clearly shows that David's impression is wrong. Roswell was not (even in the 70s and 80s when Cross lived in Roswell) and is not currently the "whitest place" amongst its neighboring cities, much less America.
Based on this policy, I am proposing removing the David Cross quote in its entirety from the Roswell, Georgia page. Any objections? --Roswell native 03:05, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- As you've seen, it's not acceptable to bowdlerize a direct quote; if it's going to be included at all it must be included in it's entirety. Still, I concur with your general opinion; the quote is completely out of place and has no actual relevance. It almost looks like it was included because of its shock value, not because it's significant in any fashion. Go ahead and yank that puppy :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 03:38, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks Doc. I removed the quote.--Roswell native 03:09, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I came across this quote last week and now am seeing that it was to have been deleted over a month ago - what is the status here? Can I remove it instead? It appears we came to a consensus, that quote is out of place here and violates Wikipedia:Profanity. The statistics above also concur. Thank you. Kat Malone (talk) 21:27, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Population
[edit]As a native Georgian, I realize that there is competition among Georgia's 2nd- and 3rd-tier cities. Some people wish to inflate the population of their hometown. However, the official 2008 estimates from the US Census Bureau, just released this year, show Roswell with a population of 87,657 (not 101,000). The US Census estimates (2008 is the last one before the official census of 2010) are the only figures used in Wikipedia--all others are considered invalid.Mason.Jones (talk) 19:37, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
