If someone could fix this, I'd be grateful. Ribbit 13:58, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Ribbit[reply]

"Rur" or "Roer"?

[edit]

This is the first time I've seen the German name "Rur" used in an English article; I've always seen the Dutch "Roer" used. Is there some standard guidance on which would be preferred? Askari Mark (Talk) 23:17, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Askari Mark, I'm answering very late here, and to be honest I agree: I'm not sure that Rur is the common name in English for this river. The Ngrams analysis bears this out: in recent years Roer is clearly dominant over Rur. This distinction becomes even clearer when you add the word "River" to the end of each name. "Rur" also appears more likely to be ambiguous than "Roer" as it is a word in e.g., Polish for "copper" as well as an abbreviation for e.g., Royal Ulster Rifles.
I'm going to do a WP:BOLD move to "Roer". FOARP (talk) 12:05, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response - better late than never! I didn't want to make a unilateral renaming decision, so thanks for doing so. Cheers! Askari Mark (Talk) 02:03, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
