Just to note in case it might be included at some point that insofar as the river has been described as 'backward-flowing' in that it flows away from the nearest bit of sea, the watershed in places at Cayton Bay is such that rain falling only 100m inland from the high water mark drains for many tens of miles in the opposite direction, before curving back east to reach the sea.
