Religious controversy
[edit]I'm not sure that this fully explains the religious controversy. A large number of Church of England members were insistent that any schools funded by the national government would teach the national religion of England, while many of those outside the Church of England were strongly opposed to paying one farthing in taxes to support any school which they would not want their children to attend...
