Commentary in Demographics Section
[edit]"Encyclopedic content must be verifiable". This phrase is strategically placed at eye's veiw when you are editing, as to prevent the type of unverfiable babble that plagues this article, particularly the Demographics portion. Such phrases as "There is a historically significant concentration of blacks in the northern part of town, although many of them have continued to move east to places like Rialto and Riverside" is just the type of unfounded and arrogant assertion that I am referring to. It reads like a conversation with the town "know-it-all", full of pointless misinformation spouted off as if they are facts. If it cant be verified, it will be deleted. 69.225.127.48 06:24, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Claim about prostitution
[edit]- Pomona is known as the "Pimpin Capital" of California due to its significant prostitution industry.
^ this is true, please stop editing it to make Pomona look more child friendly. Prostitution is rampant. --24.69.9.116
- Although it sounds like you may be an expect on this topic for something like this we'll need an independent reference. MarsRover 07:53, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- Pomona has had problems with prostitution, but plenty of cities do. What makes Pomona the "capital"? I see more prostitutes in Fresno and Riverside (just for example) than I do in Pomona. Find a source for this, and perhaps then it will be appropriate for the entry. --ThePOWERtoRULE 20:27, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I have lived in Pomona my whole life (im 26) and it is well known that Holt Ave. is infamous for prostitution, and I would frequently hear about police busts there. I have ever only seen a prostitute on the street once, but then again, i'm not out looking for them. (Viewport 19:36, 23 February 2007 (UTC))
The demographics stated in the article are incorrect. I was born and raised on Pomona, (1952-1983), Ganesha High Class of 1971 and still go there quite often. I moved to Bakersfield in 1983 for a job I only recently retired from, and am seriously considering going 'home' to Pomona, weather reasons mostly. I notice in the "warnings' dialogue box about things like "There is a historically documented concentration of blacks in the north...." but I am not be any means being racist, bigoted, prejudiced, or any other preconceptions or agenda. Matter of fact I am 'black', to use the census form term, however I consider myself simply a citizen, as I detest profiling, or even keeping track, What's the use? What difference does it make? The article states the black population in the 2010 census as 48% white (sounds a bit low. more like 30%) and 7.8% black. By simple observation and experience living there for 31 years and still spending about 4 days a month in Pomona, that figure is off. Again, by simple observation, the race relations in Pomona have dramatically improved. We get along with 'whites' far better than in the 60's and 70's, but there is a minimum of 30% black, probably more, the remaining 40% Hispanic and Asian. Should Cal Poly Pomona be removed since it is not incorporated in the city of pomona? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.104.246.68 (talk) 00:39, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Trivia
[edit]Two sections full of trivia is too much. "Narcissism is the pride of Pomona." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.131.66.162 (talk) 21:00, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Famous people of Pomona
[edit]correct me if im wrong but Jill Kelly a porn actress and Cold 187um a rapper are both from Pomona and still why do people keep on deleting them. if you go their respective pages it states that both are from Pomona, CA— Preceding unsigned comment added by Vierko9590 (talk • contribs) 18:09, 2 September 2008
- It looks like Cold 187um is currently in, while Jill Kelly has been repeatedly removed from the list. Kelly seems to meet the stated criteria of having (1) a Wikipedia bio and (2) a verifiable association with the city. Kelly seems just as notable and just as connected to Pomona as, say, Jessica Alba, so if we include Alba, we should include Kelly. The recent removals appear to be the work of a Pomona resident trying to protect the city's image, a possible conflict of interest. I welcome the opinions of other editors on this matter.—Stepheng3 (talk) 23:30, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
List of notable residents
[edit]I questioned the relevance of the Notable residents section in this article, but was quickly reverted because "the majority of these people are referenced." My point, however, was not that their residence is unverifiable, but that a list of mostly athletes and performers who happen to live or to have lived in Pomona does not seem, to me, to lend itself to an encyclopedic understanding of the city. The only person on the list that I recognize as having had a significant influence upon the city is Will Keith Kellogg, who donated the land for Cal Poly, and in whose honor Kellogg Hill is named. The rest just strike me as connective trivia that makes Pomona look like one of those sleepy hamlets or "bedroom community" suburbs about which there is nothing to say except "someone you may have heard of slept here."
My own opinion is that, as a general principle, unless one can write a well sourced sentence or two about a person's influence or impact upon the city then they ought not be mentioned in an article about the city. However, I recognize that my opinion is not supported by consensus at, e. g., WikiProject Cities and the Village pump as a general proposition, so relevance needs to be considered on a case by case basis.
As WP:NOTDIR says under Lists or repositories of loosely associated topics: "...there is nothing wrong with having lists if their entries are famous because they are associated with or significantly contribute to the list topic." Question: Is it the consensus here that Pomona is such a nowhere town that, for a famous name, just being there or from there is a "significant contribution"? ~ Ningauble (talk) 19:19, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting you should choose the fifth largest city in the most populous county in the country, far from a "sleepy little hamlet." The fact you have only heard of one person on the list, suggests you should expand your horizons, rather than have Wiki narrow theirs. Each person on the list is notable enough to have their own article in Wikipedia, and I have further sourced most of them, apparently for the sake of redundancy :-) There are thousand of cities in Wikipedia with far less impressive lists of "notable" people. In a country that unfortunately worships athletes, that Pomona has produced a number of Nationally known athletes and at least one Olympian does indeed help define this highly diverse city, as do its rappers. Namaste...DocOfSoc (talk) 00:23, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- I did not say I have not heard of these people, nor did I say that this is a sleepy little hamlet. If you disagree with the principle of WP:NOTDIR or with the notion that a city of the size and significance of Pomona does not need a celebrity brag-list to make it look "impressive," then go ahead and broaden my horizons by making the case; but attributing things to me that I did not say is simply uncivil. ~ Ningauble (talk) 15:54, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
