That was a good idea, to put Young Physique in this "Beefcake Magazines" article RichardDKBaird 07:26, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add new magazines names from my collection later. RichardDKBaird 07:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I (RichardDKBaird) am using the name Keranous now. I added the new magazines from my collection as I said I would. I organized the magazines into full sized and pocket sized. Keraunos

Fair use rationale for Image:Young Physique v 1.jpg

[edit]

Image:Young Physique v 1.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Physique is underemphasized

[edit]

Back in the 50s and 60s nobody called them beefcake magazine. Beefcake is a heterosexual term in its origin. The gays had physique magazines. This article almost ignores them. deisenbe (talk) 22:37, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the sources (especially the most high-quality scholarly sources) it does seem like the term physique magazine is much more commonly used than beefcake magazine. I'm inclined to boldly move this page to Physique magazine unless anyone objects. Colin M (talk) 21:28, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've boldly made the move. But happy to revert it if anyone thinks it deserves further discussion. Before moving I also checked Google Scholar and found ~600 results for "physique magazines" and ~100 for "beefcake magazines". Colin M (talk) 19:58, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Redirected from Physique Pictorial?

[edit]

Hello, does anyone know why this page comes up when you search for 'Physique Pictorial'? Obviously, Physique Pictorial is a Beefcake magazine but is there a reason for the redirect and no Physique Pictorial stand-alone page? If no one has any info on the redirect, I would like to write a page for Physique Pictorial. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Verumregium (talkcontribs) 00:28, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The redirect at Physique Pictorial was created as a placeholder, recognizing that an article could be written about the subject. It easily meets Wikipedia's notability standards. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 14:03, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I've submitted a small draft to get the ball rolling http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Draft:Physique_Pictorial Verumregium (talk) 23:25, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Excised unsourced list of magazines

[edit]

For future reference, below is the list of physique magazines that was previously included in this article. I've replaced it with a table which includes more structured information and is limited to magazines that can be cited to secondary sources (or ones that have a standalone article). The current table is much shorter than this list, but I hope to work on expanding it with whatever I can find in RS.

  • Full-size magazines
    • Beach Adonis
    • Demi-Gods
    • Face and Physique
    • Mr. America
    • Muscle Boy
    • Muscles a Go-Go
    • Teen Torso
    • Tomorrow's Man Special
    • Young Physique (US, 1958 - 1968)
  • Pocket-size magazines
    • Adonis
    • Art and Physique
    • Body Beautiful
    • Fizeek Art Quarterly[1]
    • Grecian Guild Pictorial
    • Male Figure
    • Male Pix
    • Man Alive
    • Manorama
    • MANual
    • Man's World
    • Mars
    • Muscle Teens
    • 101 Boys Art
    • Physique Illustrated
    • Physique Artistry
    • Physique Pictorial
    • Scan
    • Tomorrow's Man
    • Trim
    • Vim

TODOs

[edit]

These are mostly for my own reference, but additions/suggestions are welcome.

  • One or more gallery sections (probably as subsection at end of "Content" section). cf. commons:Category:Beefcake magazines
  • Structured list of notable physique photographers, artists, and studios. (Possibly to be split into a separate list article eventually)
  • Try to find more sources about physique magazines outside the US (or commentary from sources about whether this was mainly a US phenomenon). (Cooper is a decent source for UK stuff.)
  • Significantly expand "legal challenges" section to talk about major court battles, describe persecution of magazine consumers (e.g. Newton Arvin).
  • Create Category:Physique magazines (and possibly a parent category like Category:Physique photography?)
  • Update legacy section (currently mostly unsourced). Nealon pp 136-138 has some good stuff about later artistic/scholarly appreciation of physique magazines from 90s onward.
