date
[edit]the date cited to rita langer's work for the overall petavatthu collection of texts (300 bce), traces back from her own cited reference, to an entry in k.r. norman's 1983 'pali literature', page 71 - where there is found some non specific speculation about a single historical reference, found within a single narrative, within this overall collection of texts called petavatthu, to the name of a ruler of known date, based on his relationship with the well known emperor asoka. as such, this date approximation is at best a circumstantially fixed point located within one part of the complete collection of text materials - and it does not specify either one of the earliest or latest dates, for this collection overall. then, as detailed in decaroli's 2004 'haunting the buddha', there remains plenty of historical material, from which to consider some basis for this circumstantially fixed point as a latest date, rather than an earliest date. decaroli should probably be consulted for an understanding of this historical context, though no best specific quotation is available just at the moment — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.24.63.15 (talk) 19:12, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
