Suggestions

[edit]
  • Info about Konkan darwaza is missing
  • "Under the Mughals" needs ref and some more work. Too many unanswered questions pop up.
    • "However, it was re-captured in 1692 by Kashi Ranganath Sarpotdar under the guidance of Parshuram Pant Pratinidhi." who are they: Marathas???
    • "In the same year on 28 April, the Mughal Emperor received the English ambassador Sir William Norris, but nothing fruitful came from their negotiations." what is the context? what negotiations?
  • "After Sambhaji’s death in 1689, the fort was captured by Aurangzeb." is a contradiction to "In 1689, after Sambhaji died, his brother Rajaram came to possess the fort." I think this apparent contradiction is due to the diversion from chronology. I suggest the sections be reorganized to reflect chronology
  • "In 1760, Sambhaji (the king of Kolhapur) died without issue." NOT shivaji's son right? Link him to Tarabai (relationship) to avoid confusion
  • "During his minority she was the acting regent.", "In 1844, during the minority of Shivaji IV (1837–1860)" has the wrong usage of minority [1]. You one mean to say when Shivaji IV was a minor, ..... OR when Shivaji IV had lesser support .... I suspect the former.
  • Detailed Section about the shrines in the fort is needed
  • "..even till 1894 some of the ornamental work on the balcony was still intact. However now none of its former glory can be discerned." This is WP:OR. The ornamental work on the balcony may be still intact. who knows? "However now none of its former glory can be discerned" is more like an opinion than a fact. Does not tend towards an encyclopaedic tone
  • " Its shape resembles an elephant saddle, hence the name "Amberkhana", " Hence the name Sajja Kothi (The building of punishment)." need refs. All historical facts like " Rice, nachni and warai were the major provisions stored." need references as can be challenged
  • Is "Parashar caves" part of the fort?
  • [2], [3] is NOT a WP:RS
Overview of review

Frankly, not ready for GA. Needs to be done:

  • Info about Konkan darwaza is missing
-I could not get reliable sources for Konkan Darwaza. Hence did not add it. I think I will remove the picture too as it does not seem to be a remarkable entrance either in terms of art of history. As it is not mentioned in any references as such.
  • "Under the Mughals" needs ref and some more work. Too many unanswered questions pop up.
- The Mughals occupied it for a relatively short time for only 4 years and then some months. I removed that section entirely.
    • "However, it was re-captured in 1692 by Kashi Ranganath Sarpotdar under the guidance of Parshuram Pant Pratinidhi." who are they: Marathas???
- Yes they were Marathas from Vishalgad acting on their own (likely because of the power vacuum left by Sambhajis death when Shahuji tried to ascend the throne).
    • "In the same year on 28 April, the Mughal Emperor received the English ambassador Sir William Norris, but nothing fruitful came from their negotiations." what is the context? what negotiations?
-What they discussed is not known but this seems to be a important visit(probably because Sir Norris came as an official British ambassador) as it is mentioned in the Gazette. If this is not note-worthy I can remove it as well.
-I have put the history section in chronological order now.
  • "In 1760, Sambhaji (the king of Kolhapur) died without issue." NOT shivaji's son right? Link him to Tarabai (relationship) to avoid confusion
-Linked.
  • "During his minority she was the acting regent.", "In 1844, during the minority of Shivaji IV (1837–1860)" has the wrong usage of minority [4]. You one mean to say when Shivaji IV was a minor, ..... OR when Shivaji IV had lesser support .... I suspect the former.
-Sentence clarified.
  • Detailed Section about the shrines in the fort is needed
-I have sectioned them out.
-Removed OR stuff.
  • " Its shape resembles an elephant saddle, hence the name "Amberkhana", " Hence the name Sajja Kothi (The building of punishment)." need refs. All historical facts like " Rice, nachni and warai were the major provisions stored." need references as can be challenged
-I added refs whereever I found them. I removed sentences for which I could not find reliable refs.
  • Is "Parashar caves" part of the fort?
-Nope. Removed.
-Removed.

I will try to get someone to copy edit it.

Thank you for your comments. They were very helpful. I will try to expand it. Just a clarification. How much more expansion do you think is required? I can access only online sources of information so if a lot of expansion is needed things will get tough.

Also one reference link was not working (the Gazetteer of Bombay Presidency one) which I fixed. It was one of the main sources! -Belasd (talk) 04:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
History seems to be comprehensive. Major features needs an expansion. For example, one of things missing in Teen Darwaza sections is mention of the Ganesha motif on the door, such kind of detail is needed. Try to add more detail, see Marathi books or English books, web is not the only sourceof references. ASI mentions:

Panhala Fort

(i) Ambarkhana,

(ii) Andhra Vav

(iii) Dharma Kothi,

(iv) Naikinicha Sajja

(v) Tatabandi together with bastions

(vi) Teen Darwaja,

(vii) Wagh Darwaja

All of which are not even named here. I found some of them mentioned here [7] --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:23, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have now mentioned these structures in the Major Features section. I will try to expand it if I can get some books. Thanks for all your input. The Kolhapur Gazetteer reference has substantial overlap with the Bombay Gazette reference. I will add it nonetheless. --Belasd (talk) 20:18, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Books anyone?

[edit]

I am looking for books in Marathi or English on Panhala Fort to expand the subsections noted above. If anyone has access to these things or can help do drop me a line. --Belasd (talk) 04:17, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
