Citation of academic article
I have been trying to add a reference to the Controversy section of this Ozzy article. The reference in question directly relates to the issue of the controversial accusations leveled against Ozzy that he is a Satanist. The referenced article compares these accusations against Ozzy to those leveled against occultist Aleister Crowley, about whom Ozzy sang (Mr. Crowley). The referenced article further relates this comparison to prevailing Christian attitudes. This article is clearly of interest to readers and relates directly to the subject of Controversy, specifically relating to Satanism. Furthermore, the article in question is an academic article, published in an academic, peer-reviewed academic. Reasons for rejecting the addition have centered on the notability of the author, but I argue that it is not the author who is being cited here, specifically, but the issues raised in his article. Further, a Google search for the article finds at least one independent source citing this article as well. As an academic article of direct relation to the controversies surrounding Ozzy, I think it ought to be included in the Ozzy Osbourne article. The wording I have been trying to insert is quoted here, with link to the article in question:
"At least one scholar has compared the controversy surrounding Ozzy and accusations of Satanism to the reknowned occultist, Aleister Crowley, and how both were demonized by the media and the Christian Right for their antics. [1] "Wikigonish (talk) 20:20, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Whether the source publication meets and sort of Wikipedia criteria makes no difference here. The article is composed by Christopher M. Moreman Ph.D. candidate who just happens to be..???... who??? with credentials to speak on the subject from where??? The aithor is an absolute unknown. It may as well have been written by John Q. Highschool-student. And the content itself that the link is trying to support doesn't really add anything constructive to the article at all. It's just the PH.D candidate trying to promote himself and using Wikipedia as his free soapbox to try and add as many links to himself as he can. These repeated contributions are actually worth reporting to Wikipedia Administration and to the WP:COI noticeboard so that any other links to this non-notable author trying to advertise himself on Wiki can be tracked down and removed. Libs (talk) 19:59, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Firstly, the author in question is no longer a PhD candidate, but a professor of Religious Studies; the article is several years old obviously. A Google search of the author will turn up numerous other references in other areas, so this is not a PhD candidate advertising himself. So, if you are worried about credentials, the author has them because 1) he has a PhD, and was obviously working on it when he published this article, 2) the journal itself published the article, which means it was reviewed by academic editors and approved. Wiki libs and Anger22 have both accused me of a COI, but have not explained where the COI actually occurs. The article about Ozzy is relevant to the discussion of controversy; the article to I Am Legend is a legitimate review, which has now been acknowledged by a third party on that article's talk board. So, what is the problem here? Re-read the COI guidelines and you will see that there is no COI going on here. Furthermore, the argument against notability fails given the points mentioned above both in relation to the article being linked and the author himself.Wikigonish (talk) 20:12, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Note: I have changed the wording in the article in order to better explain the significance of the link in question, as per Wikilibs' concern over the content of the Ozzy article that the link is meant to support. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikigonish (talk • contribs) 20:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Christopher, the COI occurs because you personally are linking yourself into Wikipedia. Regardless of your credentials posting your own opinion in the way that you are is gaming the system to try and self promote and soapbox yourself. That's where the COI issue is. Libs (talk) 21:46, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- That's what I figured was going on, but I wanted someone to come out and say it. Firstly, I'm not him. I know him, but I'm not him. Secondly, COI doesn't automatically invoke if one DOES cite one's self. Wikipedia guidelines allow for academics to cite themselves. In this case, I happen to be aware of the work by this particular academic and think that in the instances where I've referenced it, it is relevant. My argument against the COI is basically that there simply is no COI here because the references do not conflict with the interests of the Wikipedia encyclopedia intentions. Nobody is making any money or selling any product, nobody is advertising anything. All that is being cited are academic articles that are already out in the public sphere. Both articles I've referenced I found online, so there is no extra noteriety going on here.Wikigonish (talk) 22:06, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

"Occupation"
Ozzy is not a Singer-Songwriter. Singer, yes; songwriter, occasionally; singer-songwriter, definitely not. A singer-songwriter is somebody who composes and arranges the majority of one's work, while playing and singing it as well. Throughout his career Ozzy has contributed very little to the creative production of the material he sings. Both as a member of Black Sabbath and as a solo artist, he has relied on bandmembers to create the music and many of the lyrics. Perhaps most importantly, he does not play an instrument, which is pretty much required if one is to be categorized as a singer-songwriter. I changed "singer-songwriter" to "musician" as the latter is accurate, but it was reverted to the inaccurate label. Musician may not be the best label, and if someone can think of a better one then it should be used. But it is correct, whereas singer-songwriter is not, so it is preferable. I am going to change it back to musician once more, and urge anyone who wishes to undo it to consider exactly what a singer-songwriter is, because Ozzy is certainly not one. 69.249.55.6 (talk) 19:03, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Musician is more inaccurate than Singer/songwriter, since Ozzy has only played an instrument on one track (he played the harmonica on 'The Wizard' on Black Sabbath's debut album), yet has written or co-written many more. Also, the idea that someone needs to be able to play an instrument to write a song is ludicrous. According to Geezer Butler, who wrote most of the lyrics for Black Sabbath, Ozzy came up with ALL the vocal melodies while in that band. On top of that, many of the claims that he did very little regarding the writing of songs comes from Bob Daisley, who's claims have been thrown out of court every time he raises them, since no one will corroborate his version of events. Calling him a songwriter is accurate.121.72.245.138 (talk) 13:38, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

I changed this because it looked awful.
I changed this-In August 2008, Osbourne stated on USA Today that he intends to retire from his music career after two more albums to make the most of life now he is turning 60 in December. I changed it to read-In August 2008, Osbourne stated in USA Today that he intends to retire from his music career after two more albums. I would think that he stated in USA Today, not on. And I took out the last bit because it was a run on sentence and it looked bad.--70.149.134.54 (talk) 02:29, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
No More Tears and Ozzy's retirement
I remember when No More Tears came out I heard on Seattle radio that if No More Tears didn't sell well, Ozzy Osbourne would retire. Because of this I think the album sold extremely well, so Ozzy never retired cause of it. I didn't see this in the article, so I wanted to get some clarification. 24.68.50.33 (talk) 23:47, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Regarding associated acts
You can look at this in two ways. Ozzy as a solo person, or Ozzy as in the Ozzy Osbourne band. If this is indeed the Ozzy Osbourne band, then Pride & Glory and Black Label Society does belong on there, as they are both acts that has spun off due to inactivity in the band. Erzsébet Báthory(talk|contr.) 09:56, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
- So they're associated acts to Zakk Wylde. I see where you are coming from. But as a spin off those acts are side projects for one of Ozzy's hired hands... not Ozzy directly. The associated acts field is one of the most misundertstood fields in the box(origin is the one used incorrectly most of the time) The Megadeth article, because there have been so many band members, is always ripe with useless overkill and superfluity. And this page, similarly, because editors think of Ozzy's band rather than Ozzy himself, gets the same treatment. Bob Daisley has been in 6 or 7 different bands since he was fired by Ozzy. Are those bands associated acts because they never would've existed had Ozzy/Sharon been such money mongering arsewipes trying to screw Bob out of the money they owed him? Inclusion in Guitar Hero: World Tour
Ozzy has been announced as a playable character (Singer) in the upcoming game, Guitar Hero: World Tour. Guitarhero.com and Youtube have released footage of Ozzy's motion capture (Mo-Cap) experience. He, his current lead Guitarist Zakk Wylde (Who is also a playable chacter, Guitar), original songs, Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, and Ozzfest will be in the game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.225.186.157 (talk) 21:16, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

- Well, he was in Black Sabbath, & to quote Tony Iommi "I always considered us a heavy rock band... I don't know where Heavy Metal came from". One of the things you'll find with musicians is that they often define their music quite differently to what the public might... especially with the growing hundreds of sub genrés around these days. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.72.245.138 (talk) 14:23, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Synthesizer?
The infobox lists synthesizer as one of his instuments. He is certainly not known for his synthesizer. Also, harmonica is listed, I can only think of one song that he plays harmonica, "The Wizard" and he recorded it 40 years ago and rarely ever played it in concert. The Article Needs Help
The article could use better grammar, more citations and far less bias. In general, it could be better written. Much better written. Gingermint (talk) 21:38, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
I am the author of the Uncyclopedia version of Ozzy_Osbourne. I agree after reading the article with a ton of the comments and feedback on this page. I have spent several hours working the grammar, and removed the bias as best I can on quick glance. The only issue I left unresolved until I can fix this is that I think the article needs many more photographs of Ozzy, but there are not very many in the Commons area for him. I am gong to speak with Mark Weiss and ask if he will allow me to use some of his copywriten images for Ozzy's page, provided I give him the proper credit and indicate the copyright. I have a ton of articles and books on Ozzy, and can add content that's not quite so dry. F darkbladeus 15:14, 10 July 2010
Psychology
I was under the impression Ozzy was self-medicating, partly because of psychological issues. Schizophrenia perhaps? At any rate, if this is so it should be mentioned. Gingermint (talk) 21:38, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Voice Type
I'm not sure if his voice type should be listed. He goes well into the tenor range until his post-Ozzmosis career, hitting a High D on "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", which is above the "standard" High C most tenors must hit to be qualified as such. However, he by no means has a classical-sounding voice, so operatic classifications may be null and void. Someone recently changed his range to "baritone", which I think would be a misnomer, since his voice didn't start to drop until his last two albums. Even Pavarotti stopped singing the big high notes when he was Ozzy's age, but he never lost the qualification of tenor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JohannHenrik (talk • contribs) 18:21, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- I completely disagree with populating the "voice type" field for any non-classical vocalists. To my knowledge there are no verifiable references to support any voice type for any rock vocalists. The discussion to revert additions to this field for rockers is currently underway at the talk page for the infobox template. J04n(talk page) 18:30, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- Unless specifically mentioned in text and supported by cites (such as exampled in the article about Maria Carey), agree with J04n, in the vast majority of cases it makes no sense to have a voice type for such artists.--Alf melmac 21:14, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- I completely agree. I was just worried this would become a "voice type" minefield like it has for a lot of other rock vocalists.JohannHenrik (talk) 21:24, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

The "voice type" field in the musical artist infobox template is intended for classical vocalists. This position is supported by Voice type and Voice classification in non-classical music. In the rare instance when a reliable source exists to support a voice type for a non-classical vocalist (i.e. Maria Carey) the source must be provided for inclusion in the infobox. I will revert the entry in this field for this page, if you disagree please comment at the talk page for the musical artist infobox. J04n(talk page) 16:24, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Lee Kerslake, former drummer of Uriah Heep and contributor to Ozzy, amongst others, is in financial hardship. He has auctioned off his memorabilia to pay off bills and to keep his estate from foreclosure.
His due royalties from Ozzy had never been accredited to him. He helped to put Ozzy back on the charts.
What ever happen to the Brotherhood of Fellow Musicians?

Regarding Gus G, Tommy Clueftos and Blizzcon
The press release clearly says: "Due to Zakk Wylde's current touring committments with Black Label Society And Mike Bordin's ongoing reunion tour with Faith No More, Ozzy will be playing with guitarist, Gus G, and drummer, Tommy Clueftos for this special performance", which implies that it's a one-off thing. So please stop adding them to the current line up. Erzsébet Báthory(talk|contr.) 16:30, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Questionable source?
See the passage that I removed here. It was tagged with {{Verify credibility}} questioning WP:NPOV of the source from this site. I believe if the validity of the source is in question the passage must be removed per WP:BLP, which I did. However, the source says that it received the information from a direct quote by Ozzy published in Guitar Legends, No. 37, p. 34. If in fact it is from Guitar Legends I would say that it should be returned (and sourced to the original article), but I don't have the magazine. Does anyone have a copy for verification? Comments? Unacceptably, Obviously biased site as source
I have a tiny interest in Osbourne because in the sixties I once sat alongside him on a 717 Green Line bus from Stevenage -where he really grew up- on a journey into central London ( Marble Arch) He was a tall impressive figure sitting completely motionless for nearly an hour and I always wondered who he could be.Only forty years later casually watching a late night TV programme did this same baby faced long haired figure appear. On the bus he wore a jean suit and his long hair was its original blonde. However I would ask one simple question. His image -as we are constantly told -is one of a life of very heavy drinking and drug use --yet at 62 he still looks as slim trim and healthy as a young man!!!-Something is not quite right there!-still,true or not, its an image that has made him 110 million pounds (not mentioned in the article)!!
First of all. Let me tell you that Ozzy is not a bad man. People think he worships the devvil BUT that is not true. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.208.134.176 (talk) 02:28, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
The "Ozzy Rest of the Story" reference is hilariously biased, it is obviously a very fanatically Christian site that constantly calls Ozzy a "sadist" and "pervert rocker" because he apparently offends them.
It is pointless to have such a biased reference in the article, and I will remove it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.232.219.14 (talk) 02:28, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, many people, infact a majority during the appearance of such rock bands, were offended, the same way many were offended by rappers, and you suggest we shouldn't mention that part of the story? Is that bias, or part of the reality? --94.193.135.142 (talk) 13:30, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
We shouldn't mention it if it didn't happen. Yeah, I think that's a good suggestion. Now, if it did happen, then we should quote from a source that wasn't written in crayon. Gingermint (talk) 21:31, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Animal Abuse Section
Is there a source for the assertion that Osbourne abuses animals? I'm aware of the allegations in the section, but I missed refrences to these as abuse, are there some in the sources? Unless the sources seem relatively aligned as to this point, it doesn't seem clear that we can necceasrily call it abuse. It would seem to be that it would be better to note the sources that call it abuse and leave it at that. It doesn't seem that by the prevailing morals in many cultures that biting a bat's head off or a dove's head off is necessarily animal abuse, and I don't think wikipedia should be taking a position as to this matter.--Δζ (talk) 04:07, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- You make a good point; what do you think the heading should be changed to? J04n(talk page) 10:42, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- I would think something like Animal Cruelty Controversies or similar would be fine. Maybe "Substance Abuse and Animal Cruelty Accusations" Or "... Controversies" would be a bit better. I'm not opposed to calling it abuse if the sources say this, I just think the judgment should be attributed to the sources rather than wikipedia itself. I'm not trying to be too pedantic here, but it does seem that his acts, while shocking, aren't really any different than accepted slaughtering practices in many cultures and countries, including those in Europe and North America which are perhaps most relevant to these claims. Consensus should be reached as to whether or not Under Cover is considered Ozzy's ninth studio album. There has been some recent editing back and forth over the issue at Under Cover, Black Rain (Ozzy Osbourne album), Template:Ozzy Osbourne, and possibly other pages. In looking for similar albums I came across Acid Eaters, which is listed with the Ramones' studio albums, and Garage Inc. which is not listed with Metallica's. Afterwards, Butler told Osbourne about the dream and Osbourne wrote the lyrics to "Black Sabbath", one of their first songs in a darker vein."
Ozzy's autobiography disagrees with both these claims, and even points out Geezer wrote the lyrics to the song "Black Sabbath".

Earlier Band
It has been stated in Ozzy's autobiography, I Am Ozzy, that he was also in a band with Geezer Butler before joining up with Tony and Bill.
Small update needed
"President Bush noted Osbourne's presence by joking..." the word former should be placed before president for obvious reasons, I would have done this small task myself but the protection thing is on.
- As Bush was President at the time, I think it's OK as it is; otherwise we would have to go round all such articles adding "former", and I doubt that's a good idea, even if feasible. Rodhull andemu 15:37, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Semiprotection bollocks
If this page weren't semiprotected I would have been able to disambiguate Slash -> Slash (musician). Wikipedia, the encyclopedia that only a few can edit. {{editsemiprotected}} Ozzy osbourne's official website has declared the release date for 'Scream' June 22nd, 2010. Not June 15th, 2010. That was the original date but was changed. Thought you should do that for peaple who need the truth.

Did you forget something?
I read the article and thought it was well written. There is however one little problem, it doesn't talk about when he bit the head off a bat. It should have somewhere that he did that. I mean that is information that I learned from a book that isn't on this. Worms25 (talk) 22:43, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Career spanning...
The intro states his career spans four decades, but as he has been active in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and this year doesn't that mean his career spans across six decades? Does the intro mean the duration of his career or the number of decades it spans (the latter usually being what people mean when they talk about spanning decades)...

"Ozzy"
We really should call him by his surname rather than his nickname, as a serious encyclopedia. --John (talk) 01:09, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- I agree. Even though I personally refer to him as Ozzy, I'm pretty sure "Osbourne" would be more appropriate. AmeriBrit (talk) 07:17, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

TV Commercials
There should be some mention of the hilarious and often self-depreciating commercials Ozbourne has been doing for companies like Samsung. They are pertinent because of the obvious references to Osbourne's memory loss and somewhat "drugged" mannerisms. I agree. Although I wouldn't say that his mannerismssomewhat "drugged" as much as they might be playing on his stereotypical "elsewhere" image. The charm is in the bluntness and his clear Black Country accent.68.18.196.168 (talk) 06:13, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Speak of the Devil (1982) is not a studio album, need to be removed from the list or add the other live albuns too (i prefer the first option, the live albuns will appear at "Main article: Ozzy Osbourne discography") — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luisgdh (talk • contribs) 20:52, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

"1982 Osbourne appeared as lead vocalist on the Was (Not Was) pop dance track "Shake Your Head (Let's Go to Bed)". Madonna performed backing vocals". This is incorrect.
