Badly translated Japanese

[edit]

I'm 2ndGen Japanese American. Cultural statement "genshi bakudan" - although the individual characters "Gen" and "Shi" do translate separately as "Original" and "Child" (respectively), together they form the Japanese word for "atom." My reference - my own understanding of Japanese, confirmed by "Modern Reader's Japanese-English Character Dictionary, Original Classic Edition," A. N. Nelson, Ph.D., Tuttle Publishing, 1962-1998. This article should mention the error in translation. I will hold off making changes for a period of time for community comment. Additional commentary - yes, I am aware that this was poetic and that the translation error is mentioned in the article. However, it is important to note that this translation is unique to an "American" perspective which is a little amusing some Japanese, while insulting to others given the large death toll of children.
