redundant references

[edit]The edit at 12:30, 25 July 2016 by Serge10duke seems hugely problematic. The addition of a company I've never heard of (as someone in this industry), and the re-listing alphabetically (which just happens to list this company first) instead of by importance/size, combined with having that company's name as part of the editor's username, strongly indicates advertising. The company is certainly not relevant. 8.21.87.6 (talk) 14:25, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

This page is incredibly light on information, compared to http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/OpenID. Both pages claim they are on different topics, in that they both say "not to be confused with" each other.
However, as far as I can tell, OpenID Connect is in fact equivalent to OpenID 3.0. It seems clear from the FAQ on the OpenID Foundation's website (https://openid.net/connect/faq/) that this is a successor to OpenID 2.0, and the foundation seem to consider it their latest product and current recommendation. I also understand that the industry is conforming on this standard.
It therefore seems most accurate and useful to merge the OpenID Connect article into the OpenID article, and start talking about it as the latest version of OpenID. But I haven't done deep reading on this, so I may be missing something. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nottrobin (talk • contribs) 16:43, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Nottrobin: I've gone ahead and added suggested merge templates to OpenID Connect and OpenID to try and generate some discussion about this. Nathan2055talk - contribs 20:50, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
- I agree, this seems like a reasonable merge. DoggieTimesTwo 17:37, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- I agree as well. --Tusker (talk) 15:49, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- While from a functional/historical perspective, OpenIDConnect may be regarded as "OpenID 3.0", from a technical perspective it is way different. They redesigned the spec from scratch. It is now an extension of the OAuth 2.0 standard, meaning it is not a separate protocol but an extra authentication layer built upon (or within) OAuth 2.0. Compare with OpenID 2.0 which was its own protocol, separate from OAuth 2.0 145.53.44.102 (talk) 06:48, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
