Images
[edit]The images in this article need to be better organized as they are currently all over the place. Perhaps a few mansion pictures, a coastal picture, etc, and the rest in a gallery at the bottom of the article. I only make note of this because I do not know how to make a gallery myself. Charles 16:33, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not even sure we need a gallery. Most of the pictures are mansions, and we have a whole page especially for that topic now, so having just one here would suffice. DMacks 16:46, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Where is the page of mansions? Charles 16:49, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Aw dang, I think I was thinking of Newport Cliff Walk, so not really specific to the mansions. DMacks 16:56, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- What one image best represents Newport and would be good in the lead infobox? The two loose ones there now I don't think are good (from a distance, don't have anything distinct or distinctive, etc). DMacks 16:56, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- I'm inclined to say the Mary Street picture evokes a good image of Newport. The bridge picture has too much going on in it and isn't really exemplary and the coastal picture below it (as of right now) is rather generic. I can't say Belcourt, since I'd be biased (I took that picture) and The Breakers isn't truly representative of the city's heritage in my opinion. So I'm still going to say the Mary Street picture. Charles 17:00, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Concurred with Mary St. I nuked the other two. At best, the bridge picture could be used to illustrate present-day fishing/boating activities and one of the coast pictures could suffice for the beach-related activities. DMacks 17:15, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- I fully agree. Next, I think, an article on the Newport mansions should be created. Obviously there are individual articles, but there is a lot of common history between them that could be presented with links, etc. Charles 17:22, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- I totally disagree that the Mary St. picture represents a good image of Newport and certainly nothing of its rich and abundant colonial architecture. As soon as possible I will provide photos for approval that better suggest a sense of Newport. Weird history
[edit]Regarding the first line of the History of Newport. Who is Michael Young? Ac 70.183.15.137 22:24, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Probably nobody. I've removed it. DMacks 22:27, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
History Split
[edit]I disagree with the proposed change to create a separate article for the history. It flows fine, is commonsensical, and is very representative of what most people would be looking for if they wanted to learn about Newport. I would actually like to add more to the Modern Era section regarding Newport's one time status as one of America's richest city's during British Rule, prohibition. Erick880 (talk) 23:02, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- I diagree. The histroy section is more than twice as long as that of New York City. It does not follow WP:SUMMARY: "When there is enough text in a given subtopic to merit its own article, that text can be summarized from the present article and a link provided to the more detailed article." There is certainly "enough text" in the section. It therefore should be split, with a "see also" link at the top of the shortened history section. Cheers, Rai-me 23:16, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- What can I say New York City may not be as interesting as Newport lol. Erick880 (talk) 03:01, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Current era
[edit]I disagree with the statement that President Kennedy made Hammersmith Farm his "Summer White House." I remember clearly that his "Summer White House" was the Kennedy Family Compound in Hyannisport, MA (generally identified in the media simply as "Hyannis") and that the term "Hyannis White House" was current when JFK was president. Is this "the" Newport in the USA?
[edit]According to Newport (disambiguation), there are cities named "Newport" in twenty-three American states, as well as several others throughout the English-speaking world. The one in Rhode Island is the largest, with a population of 26,000, but it's not tremendously larger than all the others, and it certainly is not a household name. (Growing up in California, "Newport" always referred to Newport Beach, CA, which is three times as large as Newport, RI.)
Yet the opening sentence of Newport reads as follows:
- This article is about the city of Newport in Wales. For the city in Rhode Island, see Newport, Rhode Island. For other uses, see Newport (disambiguation).
Is there a good reason that the Rhode Island city gets special mention here? I don't know enough about Britain to question whether the Newport in Wales is the most important, but assuming that it is, it makes more sense to me for the first sentence of its article to read simply:
- This article is about the city of Newport in Wales. For other uses, see Newport (disambiguation).
Objections? — Lawrence King (talk) 02:12, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Can any history buff tell me whether the "Newport" mentioned in the first line of this college drinking song [1] [2] refers to Newport, RI, or Newport Beach, CA, or some other Newport? Just curious.... — Lawrence King (talk) 02:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- As the editor who lobbied for the inclusion of Newport, RI in the hatnote (see Talk:Newport/Archive 2#Newport disambiguation page), I do think that the link should be included. Based on traffic statistics, Newport, Rhode Island actually gets 5,000 more readers than Newport, Wales: see Newport (14,554) and Newport, Rhode Island (19,739). These hit counts are significantly more than any other Newports in the US (not including Newport Beach, which already redirects to the California city). Typing in Newport on Google also yields a majority of links for the RI city. The best solution, IMO, would probably be for Newport to be a dab page. I doubt that will ever happen, but I definitely I think we should leave the hatnote in place given the relative prominence of the RI city compared with Newport, Wales and other Newports. Cluny School
[edit]Hi! I saw this edit from 2018 in regards to Newport, Rhode Island schools.
It is true that Wikipedia is not a trivia collection. Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_an_indiscriminate_collection_of_information states: "To provide encyclopedic value, data should be put in context with explanations referenced to independent sources." The references given explain how and why the information is important and affected the municipality.
- The Newport this week (a local newspaper) discusses how demographic trends conspired against the school, particularly the reduction in population and the
- The local ABC station also states there had been an enrollment decline that forced the school's closure.
- The Providence Journal wrote that the Cluny Closure contributed to the overpopulation in the local public school: "A number of elements — some of them unexpected — contributed to the district’s underestimating enrollment. [...] A Catholic elementary school closed unexpectedly."
By citing these sources I am putting the information in context that makes it not indiscriminate. Also note that Wikipedia functions as a gazetteer (as per Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features)), and for a relatively small municipality (Newport has 24,672 residents) there is enough room for the historical information. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:32, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- The thing is that this addition weighs the education section heavily towards one defunct private school. Almost half of the section is now about Cluny. The former Newport neighborhood public elementary schools that were consolidated into Pell aren't mentioned by name, for instance. There should probably be maybe one or two sentences about Cluny instead of the paragraph that is here now, or alternately, more information about other defunct schools.
