Bank history/lineage
[edit]I've long been interested in the history and lineage of Alaska's financial institutions, as many of them failed and/or merged during the late 1980s and we've acknowledged precious little of that, or most of any other prior history for that matter. There's also the effort, primarily by the Rasmusons, to establish branch banking in Alaska following statehood. I have a Bank of Alaska ad from 1947 in my collection, where they describe themselves as "Alaska's Branch Banking System", but that could have been several legally distinct banks operating as a collective entity under the control of the Rasmusons. This article mentions NBA's growth over the decades, but makes zero mention of the component entities, many of which were certainly notable in their own right (unless you're one of those editors who doesn't believe in WP:DEGRADE). I came across a Federal Reserve website which contained useful information. I'm not 100 percent convinced that it's complete. Here's what I came up with:
- National Bank of Alaska (ed. note: the website entry made no mention of the name Bank of Alaska, though other sources do) – founded 1916, renamed to Wells Fargo Alaska 2001
- Miners and Merchants Bank (Ketchikan) – founded 1906, acquired 1960
- The First Bank of Cordova – founded 1909, acquired 1975
- Bank of Petersburg – founded 1912, acquired 1972
- Bank of Wrangell – founded 1916, acquired 1960
- First Bank of Sitka – founded 1939, acquired 1960
- Bank of Kodiak – founded 1940, acquired 1960
- Alaska National Bank of the North (Fairbanks) – founded 1940 as Alaska National Bank of Fairbanks, renamed to Alaska National Bank 1972, renamed again 1978, acquired 1987 after failure
- Miners and Merchants Bank of Alaska (Nome) – founded 1904, acquired 1969
- First Interstate Bank of Alaska (Palmer, later Anchorage) – founded 1946 as Matanuska Valley Bank, renamed to Alaska Bank of Commerce 1973, renamed again 1983, acquired 1987 after failure
- Bank of Homer – founded 1950, acquired 1960
- Alliance Bank (Anchorage) – founded 1961 as Alaska Mutual Savings Bank, renamed to Alaska Mutual Bank 1980, renamed again 1987, acquired 1989 after failure
- United Bank Alaska (Anchorage) – founded 1975, acquired 1987
- United Bank Alaska Southeastern (Juneau) – founded 1984, acquired 1988
Anything missing from this? According to the listings found in the database, the Norwest Bank office in Faribault, Minnesota was part of the lineage of the WF takeover of NBA, but I'm clueless as to what that's about. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 13:07, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
