"Chief among NAHB's goals is providing and expanding opportunities for all consumers to have safe, decent and affordable housing."

Please remove any reference to home safety, because that claim is misleading and unsubstantiated. While NAHB promotes the American dream of homeownership and access to housing, nowhere in its mission or vision statements does it mention giving buyers a safe home. Fire safety is one issue of contention; removing responsibility for moisture intrusion and resulting toxic mold is another.

Hundreds of reliable sources confirm the fact that homebuilder associations continue to fight regulatory requirements for fire sprinkler systems, just as they refused to install smoke alarms until new laws forced them to. These sources include the International Code Council (of which builders are members), fire chiefs nationwide, mainstream media, and watch dog organizations like Homeowners of Texas.
