Publicity stunt

[edit]

This looks like a publicity stunt. It's hard to believe that the contestant wasn't forewarned, and that he didn't sue them. 203.158.89.10 (talk) 19:35, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Or that they didn't get sued by some human rights organization, as I imagine a lot of what they did was illegal. Atheuz (talk) 22:43, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You are an American, because we sue for everything. Japan is far different.
While I enjoy laughing at others minor misfortune from time to time, I am amazed that no one stepped in to stop it. If it was a big prize to set him up for life, that would've been a rational choice, but this was ridiculous. The producer is a sadist. 174.160.81.221 (talk) 04:22, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From the latest podcast on this, the producer of the show was considered a pioneer in "reality tv" (it didn't even have that name back then) and basically a god. He had the power to star-make contestants who wanted to get into the biz. Perhaps the way it went was a combination of reluctance to pushback on a senior figure (for example, everyone in the biz knew Harvey Weinstein was a menace as well, but he also got away with it) along with not seeing Stockholm syndrome when it is right there on the screen. Perhaps a dash of cultural fertile ground for the entertainment of the masses trumping the individuals needs, as well. 202.128.114.77 (talk) 03:36, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have deleted the external link in question, as even the archive.org version of it does not have the content cited. --87.114.108.254 (talk) 11:09, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"was cut off from outside communication and broadcasting"

Besides the fact that he could send and receive mail, he had a working radio and telephone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.54.5.140 (talk) 05:12, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A long program about this was broadcast on This American Life, rebroadcast on 27 April 2024. It is called "Human Spectacle." Kdammers (talk) 19:31, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lives Less Ordinary BBC podcast December 2th 2024

[edit]

A 46 minute podcast with a translator for Nasubi featured his story and can provide extensive citations for the article about the trial he was put through. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0k7vn3f For instance he confirms in the podcast that he had to stop playing the train game to continue entering sweepstakes and he also explains why he did not sue, how he felt and how his self was broken during the process. It also includes his thoughts the producer of the show, and the producer was asked by the BBC for comment. (he refused to comment, saying he would only comment directly to Nasubi via his YouTube channel). Anyway multiple lines can be cited and additional detail added to this wikipedia page and in my opinion the first fragment on this talk page could be removed as it is kind of insulting to his experience, really. 202.128.114.77 (talk) 03:22, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
