Why?

Will someone please tell me why I should read 7,000 words about this individual? Way too much! Sca (talk) 16:27, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware, neither you nor anybody else is under any obligation to read the article. Do you have any suggestions on how to improve this page, such as where you think it should be trimmed? Thanks. Acalamari 17:15, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Edit request on 6 October 2013

Critics and news reporters have been commenting on how amazing Miley's voice was on SNL so I think we should also tell how they praised her voice. Here's an example of it but it's closer to the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rboREfuVMBk

Also I remember her also being praised for her backyard sessions back in summer of 2012 by many and even her haters who claimed she couldn't sing denounced their claims and saw how amazing her voice was. However more relevant to this point is that on her documentary Miley: The Movement she was praised by Mike Will for her performance with Jolene and how unbelievably incredibly her voice is see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcqrgdABTKU

I'm saying this a just a contributing member of Wikipedia, not just a fan. I think we should add to the SNL reception that she was also praised for her voice and in the voice section we should add how she's praised for her incredible voice by Mike Will, the critics that watched SNL, and maybe even from her haters who thought she couldn't sing who's minds were changed after watching her backyard sessions DisneyFan3 (talk) 23:15, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

Not done As per the instructions, please specify a "...verbatim copy of the text..." you want to add along with sources. --NeilN talk to me 23:50, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

I gave you sources, they're just video sources. You heard Mike Will Made It say say how incredible Miley's voice was and how he wanted to work with her because of that. So we're allowed to tell how critics commented on her acting but not her singing, which has no source? It's all over the news that people are complimenting her voice and her singing performances on SNL. Do you really need any other source than that? The Mike Will Made It it right in front of your eyes. I gave you sources --DisneyFan3 (talk) 01:15, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Also to add to that is Katy Perry praising Miley Cyrus for her "incredible voice" and here's the source to go with the others http://www.mileycyrus.bz/2013/09/22/news-katy-perry-praises-miley-cyrus/ --DisneyFan3 01:25, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 Please re-read what I wrote. Edit requests need to state exactly the wording you want to add. You have written about some content you think should be added but you have not provided the exact wording of the sentences you want to add or where in the article you want to add them. --NeilN talk to me 02:35, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Okay I'll show you and I'll be specific. You'll see the paragraphs I place them in and I will italicize what I want to edit.

I want under 2012-present: New Image and Bangerz in the forth paragraph to say: "On September 16, a representative for Cyrus announced after months of media speculation that Cyrus and Hemsworth had decided to call off their engagement; ending their four-year relationship.[190] On October 2, MTV aired the documentary Miley: The Movement, which chronicled the recording of Bangerz and featured behind the scenes footage such as Cyrus preparing for her 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance.[191][192] On October 5, Cyrus hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time (the first being 2011). Cyrus received mostly positive reviews from critics, who generally praised her acting talent and stated the episode was "good but not great" and competent, however some critics stated that the episode was "lackluster".[193][194][195] Critics and news reporters also spoke very highly of Cyrus' singing and how "phenomenal" her voice was. Cyrus has begun working on her fifth studio album and plans to go on tour in 2014 to support Bangerz.[196]"

Also I want under Voice and performances in the first paragraph to say: "Cyrus is a contralto,[223] and with a "Nashville twang" in both her speech and singing voice.[224] Songs such as "These Four Walls" have been noted as prime examples of Cyrus' twangy vocals.[225][226] In her song "Goodbye", Cyrus' vocal performance is more "roosty" with a more "natural-sounding accompaniment"[227] In "Party in the U.S.A.", Cyrus' vocals display an undertone of alternative country twang[228] and features belter refrains.[229] Cyrus' vocals for the song "Obsessed" are noted as being "husky."[230] Throughout her career, Cyrus has experimented with altering her voice. Songs such as "Fly on the Wall" see Cyrus' voice processed to sound different.[231] In "The Time of Our Lives", Cyrus' vocals display a prominent use of auto-tune, and are influenced by New Wave music.[230][232] The songs taken from her Can't Be Tamed album further explore the use of auto-tune on Cyrus' vocals. The album's title track is noted as using auto-tune throughout various portions of the song's lyrics.[233] When reviewing the Wonder World Tour, Dave Paulson of The Tennessean stated, "Cyrus' spectacle sets her apart from nearly every other A-list act touring today. She's not a renowned vocalist by any stretch, but her show's choreography barely provides a moment for her to catch her breath, and she's still able to deliver."[234]

Early summer of 2012 Cyrus performed some of her favorite songs such as Look What They've Done To My Song, Lilac Whine, and Jolene. She was highly praised by critics and haters who claimed before that she couldn't sing had denounced that accusation. Cyrus' voice was highly praised by artists such as Katy Perry and Mike Will Made It. Perry was asked at the iHeartRadio Festival if she would ever collaborate with Cyrus and responded ”I don’t know…maybe…she’s got an incredible voice. I have heard her sing ‘Wrecking Ball’ before that single came out and I tweeted about it a long time ago before it even came out and I was just so excited about it for her. She’s got a set of pipes that are incredible.” When Mike Will Made It heard Cyrus perform Jolene he told his manager "I wanna work with her." Made It stated in Miley: The Movement "I was just like oh my god, you guys have no idea how crazy this girl's voice is. You listen to her sing Jolene and you just go okay." After her performance on Saturday Night Life, Cyrus' voice was and singing was highly praised by critics and news reporters stating that "it's undeniable that this girl is talented."

Is that more to your satisfactory? --DisneyFan3 (talk) 23:34, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. I've heavily trimmed your edit:
  • She was highly praised by critics and haters who claimed before that she couldn't sing had denounced that accusation. -> :unencyclopedic and poorly sourced. One link to a fashion magazine columnist is not enough.
  • "When Mike Will Made It heard Cyrus perform..." -> unsourced. Please find a source that isn't taken down for copyright violations.

The main photo of this Wikipedia Page for Miley Cyrus is out-dated massively. It is not correct in anyway as she does not look like this anymore, following is a link to what should near enough be the new picture; https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Miley+Cyrus&newwindow=1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=KN9WUvKILoeo0wXWhoCQAg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1600&bih=772#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=wKtHgXMTPJjJoM%3A%3BWKW1CsgopJSAEM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fguardianlv.com%252Fwp-content%252Fuploads%252F2013%252F09%252FMiley-Cyrus-just-loves-to-bite-her-tongue-1.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fguardianlv.com%252F2013%252F08%252Fa-letter-to-miley-cyrus-from-a-teen%252F%3B761%3B525

Well a year ago her picture definitely should have been changed but it was confirmed that she's trying to grow her hair back out. Her hair stylist that gave her the pixie cut said they're keeping it short on the sides and the back until it's long enough on top. So it's pointless to change a picture to something like that when she'll have her hair back long. But if we did change it maybe it should be more of the lines of like this http://www.littlekingsroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/miley_cyrus_022712_m.jpg --DisneyFan3 (talk) 23:43, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Both pictures are as copyright free as the one we're currently using --DisneyFan3 (talk) 01:34, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 What is your evidence of that? Please note we have proof that the photographer of the current photo has released it under a free license. --NeilN talk to me 01:43, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@NeilN very well. How about this? http://d277vln4jzkhhg.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Oscars-2012-Elton-John-AIDS-Foundation-Viewing-Party-Miley-Cyrus.jpg and here's the website it came from, which allows free images http://beautyeditor.ca/2012/08/15/miley-cyrus-has-had-such-good-hair-lately-and-then-she-went-and-chopped-it-all-off-thoughts/ --DisneyFan3 (talk) 02:01, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 I don't think you quite understand copyright. We must have a statement that explicitly says this picture is under a free use license. It does not matter if the website allows free images, the photographer still retains copyright. For example, I can upload a photo I took to Flickr but I still implicitly retain the copyright and can prevent it being used elsewhere unless I release it under a free licence. --NeilN talk to me 02:08, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@NeilN Alright, how about this? http://jalibaba.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Miley-cycrus-hair-styles-06.jpg and does this prove to be free? http://crosslineintl.blogspot.com/2012/10/different-hair-styles-of-milley-cyrus.html --DisneyFan3 (talk) 03:24, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 No, but thanks for asking. That looks like a site which has (illegally) gathered images from other sources (there are thousands of these types of sites on the web). To see what to look for, check out the source of the current photo. This has exif info meaning it is the original photograph and if you scroll down and click on the "some right reserved" link you'll go here which explicitly states the image is free to copy for any purpose as long as attribution is kept. --NeilN talk to me 04:31, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@NeilN How about this one? It's even from the same site as the current picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/60357086@N08/6989882852/in/photolist-bDEYDA-bDEYBJ-f8RzDo-8b2up9-bmvLi9-bzaktc-byYx1a-7JrWSo-g3Uc5U-bkyG7J-7Jns4z-8H76VK-bzqzHi-bKdSsx-byRGJ6-bzqzL8-eSkWs3-ekha8E-7JnFQJ-8DFw35-ag6HWd-7R9B4K-7Jk3mq-8SPgZC-dXKizX-7JiLvH-7JiLBT-ax6CpY-7JozNa --DisneyFan3 (talk) 13:24, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 Did you scroll down? It says, "All Rights Reserved" meaning the photo has not been released for free use. --NeilN talk to me 13:39, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@NeilN Okay so tell me, how the heck can I make an image mine so it's not copyright for anything. Because I want a picture of her where she has that Marilyn Monroe hair style because she looks so gorgeous, yes that's superficial but what ever, but everyone I find says "all rights reserved". So how do I make my own image as a suggestion for a new picture? Whatever it is I'll do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --DisneyFan3 (talk) 20:18, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 Simply put, you have three options:
  1. Take a photo of Cyrus yourself (not likely, I know)
  2. Write to her PR team and ask for a newer photo to be released under a free license
  3. Email someone who has taken a picture of her and ask them to donate the image to Wikipedia under a free license
For the latter two options, please see Wikipedia:Example_requests_for_permission for some sample requests. --NeilN talk to me 21:19, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@NeilN What if I was to make a screencap from youtube of a picture of Ms. Cyrus? Would there be any rules about that? --DisneyFan3 (talk) 21:33, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 That's called "fair use". Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not allow fair use images in articles when a "free use" image is available (like we have know) even if the free use image is years old (see WP:NFCCP). As a rule, no fair use images of living people are allowed as there's always the possibility of obtaining a free use image. --NeilN talk to me 21:45, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@NeilN Aren't there any sites that have a lot of free images that say "some rights reserved" that might have Miley Cyrus with that Marilyn Monroe hair style that you know of? So far those options aren't really going to work out --DisneyFan3 (talk) 22:42, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 Unfortunately not, which makes sense when you think about it. The people who are most likely to get good quality photos of Cyrus are professional photographers who keep copyright on their pictures as that's how they earn a living. --NeilN talk to me 01:18, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

@NeilN Well then how are we on wikipedia suppose to get along?--DisneyFan3 (talk) 01:51, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

@DisneyFan3 And accept that Wikipedia will never have the "best, latest" photo for every biography. --NeilN talk to me 15:40, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

antisemitism

A German news outlet indignantly points out that she lashed out against Jews:

"Es kann nicht sein, dass dieser 70 Jahre alte Jude, der seinen Schreibtisch nie verlässt, mir sagt, was in den Clubs angesagt ist".

(translating back into English, "it can't be that this 70-year old Jew [...] what's being said in the clubs" (or something like that)).

Miley Cyrus - Hannah Montana career

Miley Ray Cyrus (Born Destiny Hope Cyrus) is a 20 year old female from Tennesee. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Georgiarosie (talkcontribs) 15:33, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Should we add hip hop to infobox genres?

Since Miley has been featured in numerous hip hop collaborations lately, including "23" and "Ain't Worried About Nothin'" (and the forthcoming "Black Skinhead" remix), on top of the fact that Cyrus herself has noted Bangerz's hip hop influence, is it safe to say that hip hop can be added as an infobox genre? Controversy

There is much controversy behind her as of recent "attention-whoring" and "immature ridiculousness" that needs to be mentioned. Discography section change

In my opinion "Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus" should be listed as just "Meet Miley Cyrus" since the section just includes the albums under HER name, not Hannah Montana's. And although both albums were sold together, one is credited to Hannah Montana and the other one, well, to Miley Cyrus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FOTW-MC (talkcontribs) 01:38, 2 November 2013 (UTC) .

New look

I know this may sound stupid, but I noticed that there's not a single picture of Miley's new look (post 2012 blond haircut). Shouldn't there be pictures of how she currently looks and not how she used to look (albeit, just a year ago)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.211.177.126 (talk) 05:56, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Divide filmography...

I think it would be better arranged/organized if we'd split the filmography subcategories ('Acting credit' and 'As herself') a second time to difference between theatrical and television appereances. As in:

Filmography:

- Acting Credits:

 - Film:
 - Television:

- As herself:

 - Film:
 - Television:

Yes, as Nymf said, it was like that for years. I brought it up on the templates talk page and also on SlimVirgin because I don't see why non-notable relatives would be in the infobox? You're going to get users that are going to start adding siblings and aunts and uncles that no one has ever heard of. Doesn't make any sense. LADY LOTUSTALK 12:38, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Life and career

  • "Billy Ray adopted Trace and Brandi, Tish's young son and daughter from a previous relationship" - I know the name 'Tish' is mentioned a lot in this whole section but does it have to be there and is it her mother's real name? I was just asking?  Done - I replaced "Tish" with "Cyrus's mother". Didn't remove the parts of her in the section because it seems like she made important career decisions for Miley LADY LOTUSTALK
  • "The song also had success in countries such as the UK and Ireland" - it would be best if these were linked appropriately as United Kingdom and Ireland  Done
  • "The second and final single "Who Owns My Heart" was released in select European countries." - why was this? And what countries were they if the information is there?

Artistry

  • "In their review of the first Hannah Montana soundtrack, The Star Scoop described the songs" - this doesn't explain what The Star Scoop is to reader unfamiliar with this.  Done Removed as it is not a notable company so doesn't make sense to have it in the article
  • "Cyrus is a contralto, and with a "Nashville twang" in both her speech and singing voice" - what does Nashville twang mean?  Done - Comment I added a wiki link to 'twang' so users can see what 'twang' means, so maybe done? I can explain further if need be LADY LOTUSTALK

Public image

  • "On November 10, 2013, while accepting the Best Video award at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards, Cyrus smoked what appeared to be a joint (cannabis cigarette) " - assuming that the reader already knows what a joint is, there would be no need to explain it in brackets ('joint' is already linked!)  Done Removed the redundant "(cannabis cigarette)"

References

I just want to say that the references have definitely improved since the last GA review. I have checked all of them and there is not one dead link and all of the references are in the correct place. The citations in this article are appropriate and meets the GA criteria. Well done!

Comment Thanks, I worked hard to replace all the dead links, making sure all the references were up to par LADY LOTUSTALK

But not all of the references are reliable. In what world is this a reliable source? A fansite? Seriously? This as well. I'm sure there are a lot more as well, but those are the ones I noticed immediately while skimming the references section. — Status (talk · contribs) 20:57, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

This reference is also missing formatting. — Status (talk · contribs) 20:58, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
There is also an inconsistency between publishers. "MTV News. Viacom." vs "MTV.com", "Forbes" vs "Forbes.com". — Status (talk · contribs) 20:58, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
To add on Status' comment on inconsistencies, there's also "latimes.com" and Los Angeles Times when it should be Los Angeles Times, "usatoday.com" and USA Today when it should just be USA Today. The Kimberly Dillon Summers biography ref should either have its ISBN value field verified or removed so it doesn't display the "check ISBN value" notice.
As for other references, there are numerous citations that need to be replaced/removed. For starters, WP:RSN has repeatedly declared Daily Mail (aka "Mail Online") unreliable and has also indicated that PopCrush has no evidence if credibility or viable credentials. Perez Hilton is a gossip blogger who is notoriously unreliable, and IMDb cannot be used. "Celebrity Cafe", "Hollywood Life", and New York Daily News are questionable at best. Blogs should not be used (there is a blog.musuc.aol ref), and there's a dead link to Washington Post that cannot be used. I also would strongly recommend replacing the references to Huffington Post and People as they often have poor support for claims (i.e. having quotes followed by things like "sources say" or "according to a source" without providing the names of these "sources"- the claims would have more credibility if they at least provide the names of those "sources") and/or are biased (i.e. when reporting that a celebrity couple has ended their relationship, will often write in favor of one celeb over the other). Huffington Post has also often been criticized for making fraudulent claims in things like politics, science, and medicine. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 18:35, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the additional comments XXSNUGGUMSXX. I would recommend that the reviewer fail this article on the basis of the horrible references used. — Status (talk · contribs) 21:07, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments and additions to this review. This GAR is still on hold, I think that if these referencing issues can be addressed within five days then this article would have a good chance of passing the review. Jaguar 21:12, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Or he can just keep it on hold and the "horrible" references can be fixed. Let's not be hasty. LADY LOTUSTALK 21:19, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Definitely :) Don't worry, this can stay on hold until those references can be fixed. Seven days is just the usual approximation for GA reviews, if you need more time just let me know. Jaguar 21:31, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
I'm sure they can be replaced in time, too. Feel free to ask about certain sources if you aren't sure about their credibility. As for other reference fixes, ref (#190) should be filled in, and the ref#139 ref (#139) should read Entertainment Weekly rather than "Watching-tv.ew.com". XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 22:01, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Ok, so I fixed the latimes.com vs The Los Angeles Times, and the mtv.com vs MTV News. I also replaced a lot of unreliable sources and replaced the dead Washington Post link. Any more changes please let me know :) LADY LOTUSTALK 22:08, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

@Lady Lotus: the title field in ref#139 shouldn't have the "Ken Tucker's TV | EW.com" bits. ref#150 should read International Business Times rather than "Ibtimes.com". Replace or remove all references to Huffington Post, People, Daily Mail (Mail Online), and New York Daily News with more reliable sources. Ref#190 shouldn't just be <ref>http://www.wwd.com/media-news/fashion-memopad/marc-and-miley-7344293</ref> as that is simply a bare URL. Its text should look like one of these:
  1. <ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.wwd.com/media-news/fashion-memopad/marc-and-miley-7344293|accessdate=April 5, 2014|date=January 9, 2014|title=Marc Jacobs Taps Miley Cyrus for Spring Campaign|first=Marc|last=Karimzadeh|newspaper=Women's Wear Daily}}</ref>
  2. <ref>{{cite journal|url=http://www.wwd.com/media-news/fashion-memopad/marc-and-miley-7344293|accessdate=April 5, 2014|date=January 9, 2014|title=Marc Jacobs Taps Miley Cyrus for Spring Campaign|first=Marc|last=Karimzadeh|journal=Women's Wear Daily}}</ref>
Note: I've removed info on tattoos not only because those had poor sourcing but also because it was rather trivial. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 06:06, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Comment: I added the bit about the tattoos mainly because Angelina Jolie has it on hers, since Cyrus and Jolie have many, and hers is a featured article.
Also, I wasn't aware that The Huffington Post and The New York Daily News weren't reliable sources? People and Daily Mail yes, but I see Huffington used everywhere. Is there a discussion about it somewhere saying it's not? Just curious.
But I will get on those references, thank you, and thank you for your willingness to help. It's very much appreciated :) LADY LOTUSTALK 13:03, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
My pleasure. As for Huffington and NY Daily News, they are also respectively a blog and a tabloid. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 15:50, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
It's also worth noting that the Daily Mail has a reputation for often being bias and always intent on harming some celebrities' reputation. Maybe some articles on Mail Online would be appropriate to use as the newspaper itself is a broadsheet... Jaguar 17:11, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Jaguar, I think you just contradicted yourself. Mail Online = Daily Mail, Daily Mail is a tabloid, tabloid = unreliable. As I previously stated, WP:RSN has repeatedly declared Daily Mail (which is the same thing as Mail Online) unreliable. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk)
I had no idea why I said broadsheet! Wow I must be going crazy as I knew it was a tabloid... Jaguar 18:03, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Alright, People, Huffington Post and New York Daily News references are all removed or replaced. Also adjusted more ibtimes.com to International Business Times, ew.com to Entertainment Weekly. Any more that you guys can find? LADY LOTUSTALK 13:09, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Six more that need replacement/removal- About.com (per WP:RSN) (ref#193, ref#194, and ref#207), NY Post (tabloid) (ref#247), Us Weekly (like People, is a gossip magazine that is often poorly supported and/or biased) (ref#117), and "Hollywood Life" (gossip site) (ref#236). As for reference naming, "eonline.com" should read E! Online, "itunes.apple" should read iTunes, "voices.yahoo" should read "Yahoo! Voices", ref#196 should read "Village Voice" rather than "blogs.villagevoice.com". XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 13:47, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Wanna go halfsies? Lol you take half and I take half? After that, would the references be good? LADY LOTUSTALK 14:36, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Sure thing. The use of "halfsies" is also amusing :P. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 16:06, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
:P Well I try, figured you'd like that lol LADY LOTUSTALK 16:09, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Update NY Post, US Magazine and Hollywood Life are all replaced, along with eonline to E!, itunes.apple to iTunes. LADY LOTUSTALK 17:05, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Took some work, but now all unreliable/questionable reviews are replaced/removed. I'd say this is now ready for GA. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 23:28, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Thank you so much Snuggums, I really appreciate your help! LADY LOTUSTALK 10:23, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

On hold

This is an excellent article gaining 412093 views within the last 30 days making it one of the 300 most viewed articles on Wikipedia. I took a lot of time to read through this article and have to say that the prose is excellent considering that a lot of this article comes from quotes alone. Every reference I checked has been attended to (which was the reason why it failed the previous GAN). The prose flows well into each other sentence making it easy to read and complying per the GA criteria. The only minor issues I found this article are some very minor copy editing issues, once they are addressed I will be happy to give this article its well deserved GA status. I'll put this on hold for seven days until those issues have been taken care of. Jaguar 20:56, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for addressing all of those points. The copyediting side of this review is done, but I think once you can address those referencing issues from Status this will achieve GA! Jaguar 21:41, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Close - promoted

There has been a lot of work put into replacing and finding new references and I want to congratulate that as thanks to these recent efforts this article now meets the GA criteria. The prose is in good shape, the lead complies per WP:LEAD and the whole article has definitely improved since the last GAR. Since all of these issues have been addressed to I would say that this article is on the road to FA - I can imagine Miley Cyrus being a featured article. Well done on all the extra work!! I would like to add a paragraph to the section Public Image. The information that is currently in this section does not reflect the public image of Miley Cyrus. The current information is only an explanation about random facts of Miley Cyrus. In my paragraph I have examples of how her public image has changed and what it is now.

The public has had a watchful eye on Miley Cyrus ever since her transformation from the Disney Child Star Hannah Montana, to a new self, which she is in full control of. [1] Every year Forbes releases a 100 Most Powerful Celebrities list, she was ranked the13th most powerful celebrity of 2010, however in in following years she didn’t make the list. [2].[3] MTV released a documentary, “Miley: The Movement” that dives into the change that Miley Cyrus has been experiencing. In the documentary, Miley Cyrus explains how she felt about the public image of her VMA performance, “Every performer wants to make history, you are always gonna make them talk, you might as well make them talk for 2 months rather then 2 seconds.” (reference the documentary) This quote represents that Miley Cyrus is aware of the reactions she gets from the public. Her most influential performance on her new self was the MTV VMA’s, some of the reactions from the viewers posting on twitter were: Josh Gracin “Thanks Miley Cyrus. Now I have to explain to my 11 year old daughter why she can no longer follower your career,” Joan Rivers, “What do I think about Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s? After watching her performance, I need an antibiotic…and she needs the morning-after pill,” Judd Apatow “It’s nice that Miley is comfortable with herself.” [4] However, during the VMA’s she hit a record for 306,100 tweets per minute during the performance, according to twitter blog post recapping the VMA’s. Her performance was the second most tweeted about event right behind the 2012 presidential election at 327,452 tweets per minute. [5] Time Magazine dedicates an issue every year to the person of the year. This person is decided among votes that are ongoing throughout the entire year until they make the decision in December. In 2013 Miley Cyrus was leading the polls of the Time Person of The Year 3 days before the votes would be finalized. [6] She was not selected as either TIME Person of the year, or any of the Runner Up’s. Accoriding to W Magazine the image that young girls see in Miley Cyrus differs for each person, “Some carry a torch for Hannah Montana, the Disney Channel role that made her a star. Others favor the edgier persona introduced with her 2013 album, Bangerz. But all are fiercely devoted, waiting hours for a glimpse of Cyrus.” [7]Miley Cyrus has had a changing Public Image since the beginning of her Stardom as Hannah Montana, and it continues to change. Evegolla (talk) 21:24, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Not done for now: Hi Evegolla, and welcome to Wikipedia. I think you sound like a good writer, and I hope you will stay and participate more. Personally I will not add your suggestion to the /Public image/ section, because I find it contains elements of synthesis and details that I (personally) find trivial. I will however let your request stay open in order for other users to make their comments. Sam Sailor Sing 20:00, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
Not done: Phrases such as "...which she is in full control of" and "Her most influential performance on her new self" violate WP:NPOV. This is in addition to Sam Sailor's concerns over WP:SYNTH. --Mdann52talk to me! 14:06, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject Miley Cyrus proposal

Just a reminder that there is an ongoing discussion regarding the potential creation of WikiProject Miley Cyrus. All comments are welcome and appreciated! WikiRedactor (talk) 20:02, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Expansion of the Article

I was looking at Taylor Swift's article and I noticed that it has been heavily expanded in all sections. So many celebrities and important publications worldwide have highly praised Miley, this should be included in the article as well. Also new sections regarding lyrical themes, voice, wealth, performances, philanthropy and impact should be added as well. I am currently working on obtaining every such statement by verifiable sources. I would kindly request the editors to consider my proposal on in-depth expansion of this article. So much more has to be written and we need new pictures as well. I will provide all the details if the editors agree. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CyrockingSmiler (talkcontribs) 20:03, 18 April 2014 (UTC)  Done mostly Shane Cyrus (talk) 10:05, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

 Not done

  • http://moejackson.com/ picture credits WENN, FameFlynet Pictures, and has no license release.
  • http://siayvo.com claims " All of the images displayed are of unknown origin and sometimes we found it from search engine like google or bing." which means they are not the original author which means they don't have the authority to say the image is "public domain"
  • http://www.picviw.com claims "All of the images displayed are of unknown origin" so same thing as above

Tongue out

Searching for Cyrus reveals many articles about why her tongue is so often protruding to a long point in photographs of her. As this has become a defining characteristic the article should mention it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.130.100.102 (talk) 02:48, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Not done If we add this detail, it would sound like individual thought. Such articles about Cyrus' tongue aren't accurate and do not deserve a mention on Wikipedia. Shane Cyrus (talk) 05:15, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

What constitutes as a reliable source?

My changes regarding the philanthropy section were reverted as apparently they were not from a "reliable source" when all I've been trying to do is find "reliable sources." What does constitute a reliable source then? There were videos of her winning these important awards and they are not "reliable"? Please clarify what you mean by "reliable source". CyrockingSmiler (talk) 11:36, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Please read WP:RS, but any gossip site like CelebBuzz is not reliable, and Daily Mail has been ruled out as reliable per many discussions. You can read them here, here, or here. LADY LOTUSTALK 11:48, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for your help Lady Lotus! Trying to find more reliable sources now. CyrockingSmiler (talk) 11:53, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Miley Sex Symbol

I propose the opening recognises her as a sex symbol I made this edit twice and both times was reverted without explanation. Her reputation as a sex symbol has been in fruition now for well over a year, and is perhaps one the best known ones globally. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ScriaBen (talkcontribs) 20:11, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

No. She is known for being a singer and actress. That is her profession. Nobody works as a sex symbol. LADY LOTUSTALK 20:15, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Charities

We don't need to list every single charity (notable or not) that Cyrus has been involved in. Mentions should be limited to ones which have had a significant or long-term commitment from her. --NeilN talk to me 17:02, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Agreed. LADY LOTUSTALK 17:11, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
And one of the indicators of notability is that there should be significant coverage independent of Cyrus or the charity itself. --NeilN talk to me 17:43, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Philanthropy

A group of editors reverted edits I made because some charities were not notable as they did not have their own Wikipedia page. I deleted the charities that did not have significant coverage but kept some which are notable. However, they were reverted again and I was threatened by IPadPerson that I would be blocked because I was in an "edit war". (It's so easy for you to delete my hard work in the blink of an eye!) I accept most of the edits but in my opinion, some things MUST be added again because they really are notable and there is coverage of them independent of Cyrus or the charity itself. I have concrete facts that back up each and every one of these events- 1) In May 2009, Cyrus participated in the EIF Revlon Run/Walk For Women which raised awareness for women's cancer research, education and support programs. [1] This event was widely covered by the media as several other celebrities besides Cyrus participated in it.

2)Cyrus is also "on-call" at the "Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet", helping the "American Red Cross" highlight important initiatives and response efforts.[2] This is the RED CROSS we're talking about here. One of the most notable and instantly recognizable charities in the world.

3)In August 2010, Cyrus auctioned off her clothing and accessories on eBay. The proceeds benefited her charity, "Get Ur Good On", a social network aimed at connecting youth with volunteer and service opportunities in and around their communities.[3] There is a TON of coverage about this online.

4)She participated in the "Beauty Book for Brain Cancer" photo shoot organized by Darren Tieste. The money raised by the sales of the book went directly to brain cancer research via two charities called SNOG and HEADRUSH.[4] This was widely covered by the media as several other celebrities besides Cyrus participated in it.

5) ***You HAVE to include this in the article because it really is very important*** In October 2011, Cyrus and Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly participated in the inauguration of the Lully Community School, built by the Digicel Foundation in Arcahaie, Haiti.[5] Cyrus has done a lot of philanthropic work in Haiti and it was recognized even by the President. This must be included.

6)In November 2011, Cyrus presented at the first-ever American Giving Awards, which was the first televised celebrity tribute to community heroes.[6] Google this and you will be scrolling through the results for hours. It was widely covered by several important publications.

7)In February 2012, she participated in a fundraiser for animal charity "The Onyx and Breezy Foundation".[7] Many other celebrities participated in this one and it was covered widely.

8)She also participated in the sixth annual "Celebrity Fight Night"[8] as well as appeared in a commercial for the charity Feeding America.[9] Both of these charities are important and well established. Feeding America also has its own Wikipedia page.

9) Cyrus organized a fundraiser for her 20th birthday and encouraged fans to donate to Starkey Hearing Foundation and animal charity Saving Spot! Dog Rescue.[10][11] This was very widely covered.

10) She is also involved with "Musicians on Call", a charity that brings live and recorded music to the besides of patients to promote the healing process. This has to be put before this: "She agreed to perform at a concert benefiting this organization, joining Jordin Sparks and Gavin DeGraw.[266]"

11)In 2012, Cyrus participated in "TOMS' One Day Without Shoes Challenge" and was named the 2nd most charitable celebrity of the year, behind Taylor Swift, by the organization "Do Something".[12] The Do Something ranking has been included for 2013, it has its own Wikipedia page, and is one of the most recognizable charities in the world.

11)In December 2013, Cyrus partnered with global charity auction site Charitybuzz for the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball auction to benefit the Ryan Seacrest Foundation.[13] This has significant coverage in the press.

These are not notable according to criteria, but I'm including them anyway for your consideration: 1)She also supports the "Tony Hawk Foundation" and "Variety Power of Youth"[14][15] 2)She also supports charities such as "Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation", "Clothes Off Our Back", "Dizzy Feet Foundation" and "DonateMyDress.org".[16][17][18][19] 3)Cyrus supports the Libby Ross foundation, for which she decorated a yoga bag and auctioned it.She also supports charities such as "Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center", "GRAMMY Foundation", "Hero in Heels" and "The Art of Elysium".[20][21][22][23]

I sincerely request that I may be allowed to add at least some of these, if not all of these; into the article without the threat of my edits being deleted and/or reverted. CyrockingSmiler (talk) 21:07, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

You missed the "significant or long-term commitment from her" part the discussion above. Cyrus' every single appearance is covered by media. We don't document them all. The current seven paragraphs on philanthropy are already about three too many. --NeilN talk to me 21:14, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

I still believe 2), 5) and the Got Milk? campaign should be added. Please re-consider because they are really important. To respond to your last statement regarding the philanthropy section being "too extensive", the same section in Taylor Swift's article is overflowing with non-notable charities that don't have, in your words, "significant or long-term commitment from her". where Miley Cyrus was born.

Miley Cyrus was actually born in Franklin Tennessee which is a sub-community of Nashville, but to be more accurate i think it should be changed to Franklin Tennessee. because, say in Cedar Park which is a sub-community of Austin but is still called Cedar Park TX not Austin. Miley Cyrus was born in Franklin Tennessee not Nashville. --204.57.107.2 (talk) 16:43, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Melissa Radecki (A.K.A. biggest miley fan).

Paragraph format repair needed

In the paragraph under public image in which her drug use is discussed, towards the end it goes into her nomination for Time person of the year. This needs to be split off into a new paragraph (or perhaps added to an accolades section) as 1. it has no connection to the discussion of her drug use and 2. it gives the mistaken impression that the award nomination is connected to her drug use. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 21:35, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Not a gossip magazine

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a celebrity gossip magazine. [1] Encyclopedias can and do cover a subject's serious relationships (long term, engagements, marriages, etc.). They don't cover the guy someone met a couple months ago or document the subject's entire dating history. --NeilN talk to me 23:43, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

I thought you were questioning People Magazine as a reliable source. It has been noted in numerous sources as important to her life. Looks to be as serious as any actor relationship can be - long term measured in months, not years. I think this has gone beyond mere "gossip" at this point. I don't really care if it is in the article or not but I think the article will be more stable with the info included as there is significant pressure for the info to be in the article and it is well-referenced. Geraldo Perez (talk) 23:52, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Look who started the People RFC :-) We don't turn over article content over to the fan-girls/boys. Again, any relationships should have long-lasting notability. If they broke up tomorrow, dating for three months would not rate a mention in any serious biography. --NeilN talk to me 23:59, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
We won't know if is long-lasting until some time has passed. There is a bit of WP:Recentism in all articles and if this is transient it will be removed. It is hard to tell what is important while it is happening. As it stands now, it is harmless to have in the article and there is no policy reason to remove it. It is purely an editorial choice. I wouldn't care except for the close to edit warring history to include that particular info in this article. I suggest leave it alone unless and until it becomes irrelevant history. Geraldo Perez (talk) 00:15, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
I disagree in that it only encourages more trivial celebrity fodder to be added to this and other articles. As for policy, WP:NOTNEWS comes to mind. --NeilN talk to me 01:07, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Then take it out. See if it sticks. I won't restore it. My only real concern is the current local consensus to include it. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:18, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
I agree with Neil. I think if/when they pass the 1 year mark it would be ok to add but dating for just a few months isnt a notable relationship. LADY LOTUSTALK 03:57, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Singer-songwriter

I have provided multiple articles calling her a singer-songwriter, but yet they were deleted. http://www.billboard.com/articles/review/5740707/miley-cyrus-bangerz-track-by-track-review http://www.axs.com/news/miley-cyrus-performs-wrecking-ball-live-at-the-american-music-awards-24240 http://www.foodworldnews.com/articles/8336/20141107/miley-cyrus-net-worth-fame-fortune-really-twerk-top-2014.htm -- Joseph Prasad (talk) 23:13, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Singer-songwriter has a specific meaning as used on Wiki that may not match usage in other places. There is no indication that she does anything else than collaborate with others on lyrics only, writing melodies is doubtful. Calling her a singer-songwriter in those articles is a courtesy that does not reflect what she actually does. Geraldo Perez (talk) 23:20, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
I have seen Drake Bell and Taylor Swift considered a singer-songwriter. And it has been accepted. What is the difference?
He wasn't on Drake Bell until you changed it there, incorrectly IMO for the same reasons as applies to this article. Taylor Swift has a much better claim to writing lyrics, writing melody and singing her own songs. Geraldo Perez (talk) 23:38, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Drake Bell does the EXACT same thing. Writes melody, lyrics, and sings his own songs. These performers write their own material, accompany themselves on guitar or keyboards, usually perform solo or with limited and understated accompaniment, and are known as much for their songwriting skills as for their performance abilities. Drake Bell, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus all do that. -- Joseph Prasad (talk) 23:40, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Cyrus is most known as a singing performer, not an instrumentalist. She gets songwriting co-credits occasionally. She does not primarily perform her own material and accompany herself with an instrument while singing. She is primarily a singer and an occasional songwriter as she does get credited for both. Geraldo Perez (talk) 00:07, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Ok, I'll go along with it. Thanks for the clarification. -- Joseph Prasad (talk) 00:13, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Singer-songwriter is in reference to the folk style of music. Neither Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift or Drake are singer-songwriters. They are all singers, and songwriters but not the other LADY LOTUSTALK 11:38, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
I have found media suggesting Swift and Bell, AND it says generally folk music, that does not mean always. Singer-songwriter says These performers write their own material, accompany themselves on guitar or keyboards, usually perform solo or with limited and understated accompaniment, and are known as much for their songwriting skills as for their performance abilities. Swift and Bell both do that. But I realize Cyrus does not. -- Joseph Prasad (talk) 20:41, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
It also says "Singer-songwriters are musicians who write, compose and perform their own musical material including lyrics and melodies. As opposed to contemporary pop music singers who write or co-write their own songs, the term singer-songwriter describes a distinct form of artistry, closely associated with the folk-acoustic tradition." LADY LOTUSTALK 19:48, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Associated but not exclusive to folk-acoustic. Billy Joel is a singer-songwriter, pretty obviously, but not folk-acoustic genre. This should be looked at individually for each musical artist. Constraining this to Woody Guthrie types only is too restrictive for this to be meaningful and starts to deviate too far from common usage outside Wiki. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:25, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
It's associated with the folk[acoustic tradition, still doesn't mean always. Taylor Swift writes, composes and perform her own musical material including lyrics and melodies, and so does Drake Bell. Taylor may be pop now, but she was Country before, performing in the fashion singer-songwriters do. Bell, he as always a pop rock singer, and is now rockabilly, but he also performed in the traditional singer-songwriter fashion. Closely assciated with something does not mean always. -- Joseph Prasad (talk) 20:41, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

The key point here is the existence of the wikilink. The linked term singer-songwriter takes the reader to a specific topic, one which arguably does not include Cyrus, while the unlinked term "singer-songwriter" can include the lazy/recent usage that describes any kind of singer who writes at least some of their own songs. If somebody here insists that Cyrus can be called a singer-songwriter because of passing usage of that term in reliable sources, then it should not be wikilinked. If wikilinks are called for because of layout and style formats, they should direct the reader to singer and songwriter as separate topics. Binksternet (talk) 20:53, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.174.139.62 (talk) 13:00, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

While "spat" is not incorrect, the usage of "spit" as the simple past tense and past participle is common in the United States, where Miley Cyrus originates from. Instead of self-righteously telling people that their grammar is "appalling," please learn how English works and realize that there isn't just one single English convention which is used worldwide. 91.113.60.10 (talk) 14:03, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Worse even, spat arose as a solecism, by analogy with sitsat; Old English spittan was a weak verb (class 1, past plural attested as spittadun). Historically speaking, if you want to be really pedantic, spat is equally "incorrect" and "appalling grammar" as shat. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 23:19, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Miley Cyrus listed as LGBT?

Should Miley Cyrus be listed as LGBT as a category? When Raven Symone said that she was in LGBT relationships in the past but that she did not identify as a particular label, she was listed as LGBT in the categories because of the fact that she had had LGBT relationships. In my opinion, the same scenario applies to Miley Cyrus. 98.118.103.30 (talk) 21:15, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

Raven-Symoné indicated very clearly that she was in a serious relationship with a same-sex partner. Has Cyrus done so, or identified as any particular sexuality? If not, it's not listed. Controversial information about living people must be very well sourced per WP:BLP. –Chase (talk / contribs) 20:42, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
She stated quite clearly that she had been in relationships with same-sex partners in the past. I don't understand why the fact that she currently isn't in a relationship with a same-sex partner negates that. She should be listed as LGBT because she has clearly indicated that she is, even though she refuses to label herself as such. This is the same argument that was used for classifying Raven-Symone as LGBT. 71.233.149.240 (talk) 01:08, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
You need to provide a source for these statements that Cyrus has supposedly made. And if they are accurate, the inclusion is going to depend very heavily on her wording. We don't include LGBT categories for every person who has ever been in a same-sex relationship ie Lindsay Lohan. –Chase (talk / contribs) 05:29, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Miley Cyrus listed as a feminist?

Miley has identified as a feminist on multiple occasions; I have tried to add her to the categories "American feminists" and "Feminist musicians", but Weegeerunner and another user have argued that she does not belong in those categories as she has not done anything "notably" feminist. I still think that Miley should be added to the aforementioned categories because other celebrities like John Legend and Nicki Minaj - who are not civil rights leaders by any stretch of the imagination - have called themselves feminists have been added to those categories. Thoughts?

I don't think they should be in the category either. Actions speak louder than words, and saying that you are a feminist is not a notable enough action. Weegeerunner (talk) 17:01, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Can't Miley's LGBT advocacy be seen as "feminism in action"?
Feminism is about women's issues, not LGBT issues. LGBT advocacy is a completely different thing. Weegeerunner (talk) 17:57, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Feminism and LGBT issues are often intertwined. Beyond that, Weegeeruner, as much as I appreciate your input, I think we need more than just my opinion and your opinion before we reach a consensus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:6:3500:447:89A0:C5C5:9D74:39AC (talk) 18:02, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

I agree that the image is very vulgar and not appropriate as the lead image for this article. Wikipedia is not censored, but "not censored" does not give special favor to offensive content. File:Miley Cyrus on 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.jpg is more recent, better quality, and less offensive than the current image. Why not use that? –Chase (talk / contribs) 23:40, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
I am confused as to why it was changed in the first place by the user Fantastische. The previous image that was up for months over a year was just fine. The current one looks okay to me, though, but one from the front would be preferred. Nymf (talk) 16:33, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
I don't have a preference for either the current image or the old one that was in place before Fantastische changed it. They're both good, but both have distinct flaws: Cyrus' face is somewhat obstructed by the mic in the older picture; you only get a side profile (and she's looking down) in the newer one. I'd be fine with either. But the hand-on-crotch picture doesn't need to come back. –Chase (talk / contribs) 22:33, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Your interpretation of some of her thousands of photos and what that might mean when combined with other bits and pieces of various interviews do not add up to us making a controversial claim about a living person.
From where I'm sitting, the bit from Rolling Stone (and a similar statement on Ellen) sound like an attempt to shock and draw attention, not a discussion of her private life. "I know what I'm doing. I know I'm shocking you. When I'm dressed in that teddy bear thing, I think that's funny. I was saying yesterday, I had this obsession about this character that's like an adult baby. Like if you see a baby do something like that it's so warped and weird, but there's something creepily hot about it. So when I'm in that teddy bear suit, I'm like a creepy, sexy baby." Relationships and identities

Some of these ""relationships"" (implied: adult romantic/sexual relationships) are back-dated prior to her turning 18. All childhood friendships are relationships of one sort or another but they don't warrant being listed as people she hung out with while thinking about bedtime fairytale stories. Please erase any references in this section to her childhood friendships - it is silly including them. The only adult relationships to remain should be once she became an adult ie from 2010/November onwards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.175.12.227 (talk) 02:26, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Tame

Miley Cyrus: Tongue Tied

The article's pretty tame for what was a very public media exposure circa 2013 re: shock and sexuality. I'd recommend making the section more representative of the coverage, starting with including media like the video to the right. I am no longer watching this page—ping if you'd like a response czar 19:47, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Re: confirmation of re-engagement circa March 2016.

It is cited, under footnote 37 in the Liam Hemsworth Wikipedia article, that a month later, he told an Australian news magazine that he was _not_ re-engaged to Ms. Cyrus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.199.1.48 (talk) 06:05, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Miley's Open Talks

The article does a thorough job with Miley's overview of philanthropy and impact on communities such as LGBT but does not equally represent her openness about her own struggles with depression and the work she does to help others facing the same struggle. All links appear to be working still and I did not personally find any sources of plagiarism from the cited articles.
