Not a vegan

[edit]

I reverted this edit [1]. Huemer eats oysters and other bivalves, he calls this "Ostroveganism" which has been described as a type of new omnivorism. In a recent interview he also said he eats shrimp and elsewhere he said he has no issue with honey or insect consumption. It is WP:OR to say he has defended veganism. Eating bivalves is not vegan [2]. There is not any good sourcing describing Huemer as a vegan. Psychologist Guy (talk) 00:04, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Could we instead say he has defended vegetarianism?[1] JJPMaster (she/they) 18:33, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If we go by correct terminology, vegetarianism is meat-free and vegetarians do not eat oysters or other bivalves. Huemer in reality is a pescetarian. The problem is there is a lack of reliable sources that describe his diet. Ostroveganism has been defined as a type of "new omnivorism". Psychologist Guy (talk) 19:07, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, what we're discussing is if Huemer has defended vegetarianism/veganism, not if he personally practices it. In that op-ed I cited, he does in fact defend the vegetarian position. JJPMaster (she/they) 16:22, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In his book Dialogues on Ethical Vegetarianism published a year later in 2019 he defends ostroveganism. It is likely to confuse readers if we add an older source from 2018 saying he defends vegetarianism. In this recent interview he describes his position as "mostly vegan" then goes on to defend eating oysters, scallops and shrimp, at 2:52 he says he eats eggs [3]. What he defends is obviously the same as what he eats. For example he talks about how it is fine to eat animals without nervous systems. We have sourcing on his ostroveganism, I don't think we should add an older source on vegetarianism. Psychologist Guy (talk) 18:22, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, where has Huemer said he eats shrimp? Got a link? 2406:7400:98:5A0E:7948:668:EA81:452E (talk) 18:14, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on insect deaths

[edit]

This text was on killing insects, "Regarding killing insects, he has argued that they are not raised in horrible conditions like animals in factory farms and that animal farming requires killing more insects, claiming that it is "much less likely that insects feel pain". I don't think anyone is going to confuse that line with insect farming. But there are several interviews on YouTube where Huemer defends insect farming/deaths and says something like because they eat each other and live in terrible conditions in the wild he isn't bothered about their welfare. He seems unfamiliar with the evidence for insect sentience. Psychologist Guy (talk) 00:30, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Quote on insects

[edit]

Hi Psychologist Guy, the reason I tried to remove this quote is because, as a first glance, I thought it was an argument in favor of insects farming. When looking the source, it turns out that it isn't. Huemer was not talking about farmed insects, but about insects killed as a collateral damage of plant farming, which makes more sense. That's why I said that without context, it can be misleading. But since it is a relatively minor point in a document of more than 100 pages, my impression is that it's probably better to just remove it. Alenoach (talk) 00:31, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is important to include that quote to document his views on insects but if you dispute that source do you object to including others? In this interview from 12:00-12:20 he says he is convinced that insects do not feel pain [4]. Also in the same interview about 20 seconds later he says he is unsure if fish feel pain. Odd comments. The interview was on Siobhan O'Sullivan's podcast with Josh Milburn. I would say it passes WP:RS. Psychologist Guy (talk) 00:46, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, that's what he says in the video. Not sure if it's notable, but ok, we can keep it if you want. I may propose a few other changes to the section, you can make further edits if it's not ok. Alenoach (talk) 01:07, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
