Proposed update of the information regarding the trial against Moretti for the Viareggio train derailment
[edit]Part of an edit requested by an editor with a conflict of interest has been implemented. |
Hi everyone, I noticed that the information regarding the trial against Moretti for the Viareggio train derailment is not up to date at the latest degrees of judgement.
Here below, in yellow I have drafted a sentence with all information missing that could be integrated into the article. Furthermore, I have added two sources to back it up.
Do you think it can be a viable option to update the article? Thank you in advance for your kind support. --Claudia Frattini (talk) 09:24, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
On 30 January 2017, Moretti was convicted by an Italian court for his alleged role in a train crash in 2009, in which a freight train carrying liquefied gas derailed and caught fire at the Italian town of Viareggio, killing 32 people. Moretti received a seven-year jail sentence, but several levels of appeal may take years to resolve the conviction during which time Moretti will be free. Despite initial support from the company in retaining Moretti in his role during this legal process[1] he was shortly removed from the position of CEO.[2]
With sentence pronounced on January 8, 2021, the Supreme Court annulled the sentence issued by the Court of Appeal on 20 June 2019, deferring his position to a new appeal judgment.[3][4]

- @WhinyTheYounger: Thank you very much for your help!
- The text as written, however, could give rise to the misunderstanding that the annulment is a consequence of the statue of limitation for the manslaughter conviction. Actually, the convictions were annulled because the Court of Cassation deemed it necessary for the defendants to undergo a new judgment to assess responsibility, as a proper assessment of the defendants' guilt had not previously been made. To this end, I would propose to slightly revise the text as proposed below (I've highlighted changes in yellow). What do you think? --Claudia Frattini (talk) 13:08, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
- In January 2021, the Supreme Court of Cassation overturned Moretti's conviction
asdeclaring the statute of limitations for a manslaughter convictionhad expired. The case was remandedand deferring his position to the appeals court of Florence for a new judgement on his responsibilities.
