Notability....
[edit]I'm not sure if it's particularly a GNG issue, but there is some question about his notability because of sources.
The first source listed is his faculty page on Columbia, which is used for job info only. No real issues there. The second source is a rush transcript of Marable talking about his book on Malcolm X. It's not independent coverage of the book between third parties, so the source is not independent of the subject. The third is about Marable's election as chair of MDS, an event "attended by 100 people" of whom 16 were there elected board members, and Marable was also one of the speakers. I question the notability of this organization, and also its lack of independence from the subject.
Source 4, HSAN, is just a list of board members. Everyone else on the board is a music industry person, and Marable is at the bottom just above the Treasurer. I'm therefore not convinced he played an important role there considering P Diddy, Russell Simmons, and Lyor Cohen are at the top of said list. Source 5 is a dead link, supposedly on his role on the Amistad Commission, which is not elaborated upon in the article.
The next source is a press release that quotes Marable in the initial paragraph, but it does not seem to have been written by him, nor does it source Marable's quote. The release then references a Guardian article with URL. There is again no followup as to what happened, so its actual importance is unverifiable, and I don't believe we should be relying on press releases as major sources anyhow. I could even argue that the coverage of Marable is trivial given the amount of space given to the Guardian writer's material.
The Black Commentator source is written by Marable, who served on the site's editorial board at the time he wrote it. Therefore, it is in no way an independent source. The next source is the same article on Marable's own website, so the same critique apples here as well. I have removed it as a duplicate.
Finally we have his NYT obit, which is the only truly independently verifiable item in the source list.
Therefore, since the only verifiably independent source that is not trivial is his NYT obit, does he really meet the guidelines? His bibliography is unsourced with no reviews, there's nothing indicating his impact on anything outside of what he was directly involved in personally, and there's nothing here so far that meets the nontrivial independent coverage requirement. - I'm afraid this article is not as good as it could be, nor does it use all available sources. Regarding notability, these appear to be profiles of the type that help meet GNG:

- Each of those is mostly about Marable or his writings or speeches. There are more, but that seems sufficient. His new biography seems likely to gain attention too. Will Beback talk 00:29, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
There were obituaries in the NY Times, LA Times, Atlanta-Journal Constitution, and New York Daily News, as of 9:30 pm April 1st. Yes, this article needs some help, but I think it meets the notability guidelines. Earlopogous 01:25, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
- Notability is definitely not a problem. See [1], [2], [3] and others like it. --JN466 00:07, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
