Split
[edit]Now that MLB has decided to make this return for a second year in 2022, with the Cubs and Reds on August 11, 2022, I suggest we start splitting this like NHL Winter Classic, 2008 NHL Winter Classic, 2009 NHL Winter Classic, and so on. So here there should be a main MLB at Field of Dreams page and then separate 2021 MLB at Field of Dreams and 2022 MLB at Field of Dreams pages. Zzyzx11 (talk) 04:10, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- Zzyzx11, this page seems to be about the 2021 game, so I would rename it to 2021 MLB at Field of Dreams, or 2021 MLB at Field of Dreams Game. Then I think we need new articles for the 2022 game and main series, with more background on the development. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:27, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- I'm open to that suggestion. IMO, either choosing to rename the page first or splitting first is secondary as long proper attribution is maintained and some administrator like you or me has the ability to revert a mess if things go wrong. My primary goal is to just have the 2021 and 2022 games on separate pages instead of a long one should MLB continue these games in 2023 and beyond. Zzyzx11 (talk) 01:29, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
- I would support having separate articles for 2021 and 2022 if the 2022 (and forward) articles have the same structure without duplicating background material. If MLB does not extend this beyond 2022 it would be logical to merge back to a single article, perhaps titled "MLB Field of Dreams games." Cecropia (talk) 12:53, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
If this event becomes an ongoing occurrence, then separate pages for each instance would absolutely make sense. If it is discontinued after 2 or 3 games, however, I think a single page would be more appropriate. JoeyLyles (talk) 14:38, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Further complicating matters, we now have MiLB at Field of Dreams, Cedar Rapids vs. Quad Cities on August 9.[1] – Muboshgu (talk) 17:14, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Re-visiting this discussion to suggest _not_ splitting, and maintaining a single article about MLB at Field of Dreams games. As with MLB Little League Classic, there is one history as to how MLB decided to play at the venue, and background on stadium construction and logistics. Annual playings (if they continue) are regular-season games, which are individually non-notable in a stand-alone manner and for which full team rosters and detailed box scores are undue. The 2022 MLB at Field of Dreams article was created in good faith, but without consensus as far as I can tell. I suggest revising and maintaining the MLB at Field of Dreams article in the manner of the MLB Little League Classic article, with incremental updates for annual playings rather than creating new articles. Dmoore5556 (talk) 17:39, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- I concur. We just had a similar discussion at the project talk page not long ago about the Little League Classic and the consensus was to merge. I think the same should be done with the Field of Dreams Games and they're essentially the same thing (neutral site regular season games). oknazevad (talk) 21:57, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- Let the article mature on its own. If after a few years the article grows too large to contain each season's game(s), either pare this article or WP:SPLIT it according to the various guidelines and policies. In any event, I'm not sure each individual game would warrant an entire article, as their notability derives only from being the Field of Dreams Game. Right now, I agree with maintaining a single article. Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 14:35, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
Today, I updated the article in the vein of MLB Little League Classic, a recurring event with a single background, plus linescore and brief recap of the annual playing(s). The 2022-specific version of the article (which had no unique content outside of invoking full team roster templates) now redirects to this article. We can revisit in the future if conditions warrant. Dmoore5556 (talk) 21:43, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
Requested move 4 December 2021
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. Those opposing note that this it is too early for the year to be needed as a disambiguator, so another discussion may be more appropriate when or if the 2022 game has occurred. The only support comment besides the nominator also indicates that it may be too early. (closed by non-admin page mover) ASUKITE 20:27, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
MLB at Field of Dreams → 2021 MLB at Field of Dreams – Just trying to get the ball rolling again on something that was discussed in September. This article is clearly about the 2021 game and should be moved. This is a yearly game (or at least will happen again next year), this article should be like the MLB Little League Classic, and articles like 2021 MLB Little League Classic. A new broader article should be wrriten for the game as a whole. - Support. I don't think a 2022 article is necessary yet as the current split tag suggests, but this title should probably go to the concept, unless the game doesn't happen due to lockout reasons and gets abandoned (highly unlikely). Nohomersryan (talk) 04:41, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: First, as I essentially stated in that September discussion, it is all basically academic if we move the page first then split, or do the page split without any page move. As long as proper attribution is maintained. Second, with a ongoing players' labor dispute, the playing of the baseball season including this game remains in doubt, so I'm inclined to treat this as WP:TOOSOON. Zzyzx11 (talk) 19:13, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. No need to move or split as yet. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Andrewa (talk) 06:05, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. If there's only been the one yet, no need to add the disambiguator.-- Aervanath (talk) 15:49, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. For now, the main page is fine to describe the concept, the one completed event and the one other that is planned. JoeyLyles (talk) 17:18, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
