M4 was the first motorway to link London and Birmingham, the M40 connection came much later as for years it just conmnected London with Oxford albeit the M40 may be older as a motorway, SqueakBox 19:07, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No the first motorway link was the M1/M6. The M4 goes to Cardiff. Regan123 19:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Junction 7

[edit]

I don't think you can use junction 7 (thame) to get onto the M40 and travel west, there is a slip road, but I believe that it has been closed off, for some reason, does anyone know why this sliproad is closed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.133.92.229 (talk) 08:27, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's because the junction was too close to the new sliproads they built for the A40 (junction 8) when the M40 was extended to Birmingham. Mpvide65 (talk) 21:49, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stokenchurch Cutting

[edit]

Does anyone else call this "Chicken Shit Gulley"? My brother-in-law claims that chicken guano was used to stabilise the sides of the cutting while it was under construction but I can't find any substantiation of this. Mr Larrington (talk) 14:27, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, as a former resident of Stokenchurch, I have never heard of this name. The only nickname locally is "The Canyon" Regards, David J Johnson (talk) 19:54, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

102 car pile up

[edit]

there was a 102 car cash on the M40 between j6 and j7 in march 2002. should this get a section in the aticle. was this the largest crash in england? 193.133.92.229 (talk) 14:44, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to dreadful English in parts of this article

[edit]

I am pretty sure some of the dates are wrong. I drove from West London around the northern side of Oxford and on to Gloucester (and Wales) scores of times from the late 1970s to the late 1990s, and I am sure there was no completed M40 in 1997.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.101.24.44 (talkcontribs) 14:39, 2 Jul 2016 (UTC)

If you think a date is wrong, please help by finding a published reliable source to disprove it. -- Dr Greg  talk  15:30, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading map

[edit]
The path of the M40 corridor between London and Birmingham showing other important roads and major settlements.

I removed this map from the article as the colouring gives the impression that the M40 stops at the A46 near Warwick. In fact it continues to its intersection with the M42, some 15 miles further north-west. Similarly at the south-east end, it continues another couple of miles inside the M25 before becoming the A40. -- DeFacto (talk). 13:32, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested merge of M40 corridor 30 August 2024

[edit]

I hereby suggest to merge the article M40 corridor into this article (M40 motorway). Since the two pages have co-existed for a bit over 16 years (since 23:59, 31 July 2008), it seems prudent to create a discussion first.

The corridor does not appear to be independently notable: all of it's references refer solely to the road and not to a 'wider corridor' of development around the road.

The corridor article is easily mergeable with little duplication or weight issues: the lead merges into this article's lead, and it's sections are easily accommodatable within the road article, perhaps as children of a new 'route' section (the merged M40 corridor#route being re-named to 'overview' or similar), which could also include '#junctions', '#detailed routing', and '#services' from the present article. I cannot see that weight issues could arise since a very large part of the very essence of a motorway is the route which it takes.

  • Merge – The concept is not only poorly defined, it's pretty obscure: I've lived in the alleged corridor for 20+ years, and could count with the fingers of one hand the number of times I'm heard anyone use the term. (Also couldn't tell you what exactly it means, but perhaps that's just my own ignorance.) Merging whatever salient content there may be (not much, I'd wager) into the main M40 article should be straightforward enough. --DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:38, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Primary vote for just Delete or secondary vote for Merge. If you look there's actually very little about the corridor itself to actually merge into here. All it says is there's a motorway, a railway line and some towns along the way. Nothing about why the corridor matters or indeed what it actually is and where externally it is defined. 10mmsocket (talk) 13:25, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge into M40 motorway Not actually convinced there's enough well sourced material in M40 corridor that can be moved to M40 motorway, but the corridor article should just be redirected to the motorway one. If anyone thinks there's anything salvagable feel free to bring it over. Canterbury Tail talk 13:55, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ten days and not a dissenting opinion. Time for someone to close and do the deed on the article? 10mmsocket (talk) 14:16, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
