Mint

[edit]

"The town is principally residential but is also home to the printing works where all English banknotes are printed."

I am quite certain this is not correct (I live in Loughton) but can't find any references to show this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thewyzewun (talkcontribs) 22:47, 31 July 2006

The information is correct. If you make your way down Rectory Lane and turn left into Langston Road, after a few hundred yards you will see an enormous building with an arched roof. It is 800 feet long and 125 feet wide, so it is hard to miss! This is the Bank of England Printing Works, now managed by De La Rue, and it has been there for fifty years. The TV movie Hot Money was set there, many local people work there, and the landmark building can clearly be seen from many of the hillier parts of Loughton. There are many web references to the Works, including: [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.194.86.1 (talkcontribs) 09:54, 15 August 2006
So Loughton is a hole with a mint in it? Mishagale 14:20, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to dislike Loughton, just out of interest, from what superior town do you hail? Angryafghan (talk) 03:31, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was born in Loughton. That's how I know what a ghastly place it is. Mishagale (talk) 18:05, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Back on topic, the M11 junction in Debden has no entrance leading away from London; supposedly an anti-theft measure for the Bank of England building. Also, the works are located in Langston Road. --90.206.122.228 (talk) 22:12, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is true; however, there is a way around for emergency vehicles to take the M11 through a locked gate. I went through there a few times working with the ambulance service. Argybargybob (talk) 14:39, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Too much information!

[edit]

Couldn't someone cut the info...It is so busy with information that it is actually un-informing...Couldn't someone cut it down to its barebones and do more about Loughton today? It deserves a mention it's social mix of old M/C, nouveau riche and Z-list celebrities....--Madkaffir 16:36, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rather than cut the info, it would be better to divide it into additional pages, such as History, Cultural Life, Sport etc, with brief hyperlinked summaries on the main page. Personally I think an encyclopaedic article should contain much more information about an area's history, context and development than on which transient celebrity happens to live in the town at any particular moment! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.194.86.1 (talk) 12:42, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There IS too much spurious information, and some of it is wrong. As regards the railways, only a brief mention of the history of the railway to and then through Loughton is necessary. More details can be put in the article about Loughton Station, and the history and development of the whole line out from London is not relevant to Loughton. The bit with the history of the whole line is also wrong (as at 13 Nov 2008). The line from Leytonstone to Newbury Park was not constructed until the 1930's or opened until after WW2. The original "loop" went via a railway that ran from Newbury Park to Ilford that closed to passengers when the Central Line opened and was subsequently closed and demolished altogether. 82.29.215.181 (talk) 16:16, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I edited the 'prehistory' section for clarity and ended up with about two sentences left out of two fat paragraphs. I think it's fairly safe to say, quite a lot of stuff deserves to go. --90.206.122.228 (talk) 01:07, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree, there is far to much 'information'. The page for Loughton is bigger than London's!(Spymo (talk) 20:54, 30 July 2009 (UTC))[reply]

I've tried to summarise the History section, so it doesn't duplicate the "History of Loughton" article, and that article can stay as it is - the section still might be too long but hopefully it's now in a position where it might be easier to edit down further. Not sure a detailed list of bus services is essential! Richard3120 (talk) 13:38, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BNP election

[edit]

Should there be a note somewhere about the election of Jewish BNP councillor Pat Richardson? It's pretty notable.[2] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.206.122.228 (talk) 00:35, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
