Proposal

[edit]

I propose we change this article into a table of settlements by population, similar to List of towns in the Republic of Ireland by population. We could list the 50 (or even 100) biggest settlements. I've started work on a table here.

Pop figures

[edit]

The figures given here are wildly different from the figures for NI towns here: List of settlements on the island of Ireland by population can someone fix this discrepancy with whatever are the most accurate figures? - 86.44.149.247 (talk) 11:56, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Recent updates to list

[edit]

I've made significant updates to this list, mostly to reflect numbers listed by NISRA for the 2011 Census. Some reordering has been done in line with these newer figures. Some settlements no longer made the top 50 e.g. Ahoghill and Dungiven. These were replaced by Waringstown and Culmore. Districts have also changed and now use the 2015 scheme. Figures for Belfast and Derry may no longer reflect their respective articles, as those articles use multiple figures, some now outdated. For consistency, this list now uses a single source: Census 2011, Usual Resident Population. I've reverted some more recent edits to the list which were either unsourced (Coleraine) or using an outdated figure with a different urban definition (Belfast). I'm open to discussion on the scheme used here but I believe that Census 2011 figures represent the most reliable source. Declangi (talk) 10:13, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Census 2021 populations

[edit]

I have restored the populations for a number of settlements in this list, and in their respective articles, to their 2011 census figures. Many of the population changes made here by the IP edits of 25 March through 6 April, and in their articles, were unsourced and in some cases changed the title of a reference to 2021 when the reference was still for 2011 data.

Release of 2021 census data by NISRA appears to be ongoing, as indicated in their timetable here. Currently released data, available for viewing in their Explorer application, is generally not comparable with 2011 settlement data. Thanks, Declangi (talk) 06:32, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Now that there is much more data published for Census 2021, I've updated the table to 2021 populations from NISRA's Flexible Table Builder, where available. Declangi (talk) 07:28, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
