Numbers of Soldiers

[edit]

I reverted several edits which had removed contemporary studies of soldier numbers. There were never 32,000 soldiers from WV, that number not only included thousands of PA and OH soldiers, but also some several thousand re-enlistments which were counted as "new" soldiers. Old information is not appropriate in the face of current studies. Dubyavee (talk) 15:13, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is a screenshot from the new book on the 7th WV Inf. You can see that the authors have called the "32,000" number "misleading". You can phrase the information I put in the article differently, but the information I put there should stay.

I believe the context attempted to be added is misleading in its own, not to mention the 20,000 to 25,000 mentioned was an earlier estimate for the number of troops as a whole and not an estimate for the number of troops that were born in West Virginia. The current version is neutral, mentions the main regions of recruitment, as well as volunteers from PA and OH, and doesn't attempt to undermine the fact that most West Virginia volunteers were Union soldiers. I'm not sure what the ulterior agenda is behind it, but it's misleading to the viewer. MarkMcCain (talk) 16:39, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
