Did You Know A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on July 20, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that footballer Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored a 12-minute hat-trick after coming on as a substitute?
Current status: Featured list

Early seasons

[edit]

I've managed to source the bulk of this list through Soccerbot and Soccerbase, but am struggling for game stats pre-1996-97 season. Can anybody help? Heightwatcher (talk) 12:24, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Result

[edit]

I'm a little confused though I think I've worked it out. Anyway, I reckon the result column should indicate whether the first score is the home team or the score of the hat-trick scorer's team. It's not entirely clear. 91.106.122.249 (talk) 23:43, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The wonders of Wikipedia

[edit]

I can't believe this is actually a stand-alone list. But hey, that's what makes this website so good, right? :) Jrcla2 21:37, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple hat-tricks

[edit]

The references prove that Shearer scored at least 11 hat-tricks. They don't prove that he scored exactly 11. If you want to claim the table is a complete list rather than a partial list, you need a separate reference to that effect. jnestorius(talk) 13:28, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also need references that a player is or is not a current Premier League player. jnestorius(talk) 13:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Incredible. This has been scrutinised throughout the WP:FLC process, it's a shame you didn't contribute to that. Every single hat-trick ever scored in the Premier League is in this table. There is no one single WP:RS to cover these. The list is complete. As for "proving they're current", it now appears that the next thing you'll ask for is proof that their names are spelt a particular way. I'll happily remove that information. Perhaps next time you decide to do this kind of thing to featured content, you could discuss it with the relevant parties before slapping a maintenance notice on the article. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:47, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How do you know " Every single hat-trick ever scored in the Premier League is in this table." How do you know you haven't slipped up and missed one? If they're no one source, then this is original research or synthesis. The standards for football trivia lists are the same as for other topics. jnestorius(talk) 14:06, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then advocate it for delisting at WP:FLRC. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 14:15, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Are you implying that once an article has reached featured status, it is immune to some of the ordinary actions of editors until its featured status is withdrawn? If so, could you point me to the policy where this is established? jnestorius(talk) 15:56, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No. I suggested that you list it for FLRC which the process to delist featured lists which are considered to no longer meet the feature list criteria. Your inference of any implication I may have made is wildly inaccurate. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:11, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't care whether the article is delisted or not. I only care that the original research is removed, either by removing the section or adding appropriate references. That can be done by normal editing and Talk-page discussion. If you don't want to participate in that, that's your prerogative, but I don't think you should remove a valid tag from the page. jnestorius(talk) 16:18, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't discuss this on the talkpage before you tagged a section on featured content. I've removed the highlights pertaining to current players (despite this being non-controversial information, and hence not really needing referencing). I've added an external link which may well cover your OR concerns. I would rather you followed up with your tagging by taking this to FLRC if you are still not satisfied. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:24, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That link would be ideal, apart from the mistakes. I found another on LexisNexis [The Independent (London) April 11, 2008 Pg. 58] that's out of date but has AFAIK only one mistake [Ruud] in places 1-18. But really the only way to guarantee continuous accuracy is to have a realtime query of an up-to-date database, which I hope is what Statbunker will be once they debug their SQL. Until then this page cannot be certifiably reliable: it's just a few enthusiasts trying to fact-check each other. jnestorius(talk) 19:47, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can't be responsible for SQL databases I'm afraid. Once more, if you have real concerns, take the list to FLRC. In the meantime I'll be doing other things. Thanks for your concern. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:52, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And by the way, feel free to actually improve the list, rather than just stick maintenance notices on without trying to discuss issues with major contributors first. If you find better and more reliable sources then improve the Wikipedia, don't just keep it under your hat. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:56, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I also wanted to say thanks for actually giving a damn about the quality of things here. It's easy for us to "not see the wood for the trees". Your detailed examination of this list is useful and your continuing investigations in how best to solve the problems you've identified is appreciated. I apologise if (if? if?!) I've come across as hostile and defensive over one of "my" lists. Just one of those things. So. Let's see how we go. But my original offer stands. If you really think there's a need for a maintenance tag, or you have concerns over synthesis or OR, please do list it at FLRC. It only took about 300 hours of work (between me and a number of other editors) to reference each and every hat-trick, but I understand your concerns over comprehensiveness.... 4 Goals in a Game

[edit]

Any problems with creating a second table for all the times someone has scored 4 in a game? —Preceding unsigned comment added by CouchNZ (talkcontribs) 17:03, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also, in the introductory paragraph:

'Twenty players have scored more than three goals in a match; of these, four players, Andrew Cole, Alan Shearer, Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov have scored five'.

Add:

and only six of the twenty players have managed it more than once: Andrew Cole, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard, who have all achieved the feat twice.

This is significant because with time, there will be an increasing number of players who will score more than three goals in a match so it would be useful to keep a separate record for who has managed it more than once/the most number of times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.105.216.92 (talk) 17:28, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly. Can you show us here what you're proposing? The Rambling Man (talk) 17:43, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps this table (or a simpler version of it) could be placed somewhere in the article? — MT (talk) 04:55, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A simpler table could look something like this only listing players who have achieved this feat more than once. As more players accomplish that, it shows who has done this the most number of times.

Name|Number of occasions&Opposition|Dates

Yakubu Aiyegbeni|2 (Middlesbrough, Swansea City)|15/05/2004, 03/12/2011

Michael Owen|2 (Nottingham Forest, West Bromwich Albion)|24/10/1998, 26/04/2003

Robbie Fowler|2 (Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbrough)|23/09/1995, 14/12/1996

Dimitar Berbatov|2 (Reading, Blackburn)|29/12/2007, 27/11/2010

Frank Lampard|2 (Derby, Aston Villa)|12/03/2008, 27/03/2010

Andrew Cole|2 (Ipswich Town, Newcastle United)|04/03/1995, 30/08/1999

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer|2 (Nottingham Forest, Everton)|06/02/1999, 04/12/1999

Also looking at those 14 dates, this has been done:

4 times in December 3 times in March and once in February, April, May, August, September, October and November.

It's never been done in January, (obviously the season is closed in June/July).

I don't think you need a separate table. If it is important to distinguish 4 and 5 goal hauls then just add a new column to the existing table with number of goals scored and make it sortable. Breaking down by calendar month seems a little trivial and I don't think it is necessary. --Jameboy (talk) 00:39, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The entry for Robert Earnshaw has an error. Charlton were the home team and Earnshaw scored his hatrick for West Bromwich Albion who were the away team. It was Charlton 1 WBA 4 not as displayed on the page.

Ynysygwas (talk) 19:19, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: I think it's actually correct, although the table format confused me a bit at first, but, from the key at the top of the table:
  • He's marked with a "dagger" because he scored the hat-trick as a substitute.
  • In the For column is West Bromwich Albion, because that's who he scored it for.
  • In the Against column is Charlton Athletic, because that's who he scored it against.
  • Charlton Athletic are marked with a *, because they were the home team.
  • The Result is given as 1-4, because the home team score is given first.
Begoontalk 04:06, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reference #229 (Man City 3–0 West Brom) has an incorrect link. It is the same link as reference #230 (Everton 5-3 Blackpool).

"The fastest scorer of a four-goal haul on record in England"

[edit]

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is described a such, for the four goals in twelve minutes that he once scored against Forest, and I know that cites an article from The Independent as a reference, but it is a false claim - in 1931, W.G. Richardson scored four goals in five minutes, whilst playing for Albion in a match at West Ham. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dje wba (talkcontribs) 13:16, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures on the side - most PL hat-tricks from midfield

[edit]

I just thought it should be noted that on the right-hand side where it displays pictures of PL players past and present it states that Frank Lampard, with 3 PL hat-tricks, has scored the most out of any midfielder.

This is in fact incorrect - Matthew Le Tisser has 4. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.121.142.161 (talk) 20:12, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

to:

"Sadio Mané holds the record for the quickest Premier League hat-trick, scoring three times for Southampton against Aston Villa in 3 minutes 14 seconds"

because he has just beaten the Premier League record for the fastest hat-trick today.

REPLACE:

Robbie Fowler holds the record for the quickest Premier League hat-trick, netting three times for Liverpool against Arsenal in 4 minutes 23 seconds,[1] while, in 1999, Manchester United player Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored four goals in twelve minutes as a substitute against Nottingham Forest, "the fastest scorer of a four-goal haul on record in England".[2]

WITH:

Sadio Mane holds the record for the quickest Premier League hat-trick, netting three times for Southampton against Aston Villa in two minutes and 56 seconds[1] while, in 1999, Manchester United player Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored four goals in twelve minutes as a substitute against Nottingham Forest, "the fastest scorer of a four-goal haul on record in England".[2]

Re: "quickest Premier League hat-trick" citation

[edit]

The reference to this no longer links to a correct citation. A correct citation link needs to be added as the BBC website cited, may possibly not be updated for some time - it was last updated in 2004. Thanks,

Butdavid (talk) 21:07, 16 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The BBC website cited has still to be updated with the now new correct information regarding the "quickest Premier League hat-trick". I have contacted them regarding their now incorrect information, but it may not be updated for some time. I would suggest maybe a different citation link to a credible website be added rather than the BBC link. Thanks. Butdavid (talk) 20:01, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect Hat-tricks

[edit]

A perfect hat-trick is a rare feat: a player scoring once each with left foot, right foot and their head. I believe this has only happened on 31 occasions in the Premier League and I do not believe any list exists which displays these by date and opposition etc. Given the familiarity of the term I find it difficult to believe that there is nothing like this already online. Since this list is probably the most comprehensive list of Premier League hat-tricks online, might it be constructive to include markers to indicate where a hat-trick was perfect? These shouldn't be too difficult to cite given the relatively small number and that this information is usually found in the match report (again, it's a very rare feat). There is also the even rarer headed hat-trick (all 3 goals scored with the head) which has only been done twice (by Duncan Ferguson and Salomon Rondon) which might be worth including. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Olijh29 (talkcontribs) 16:33, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Youngest and Oldest scorers of a PL hat-trick

[edit]

This article lacks any mention of youngest and oldest hat-trick scorers in the PL. Does anyone have a good source for this information? I beleieve Michael Owen was the youngest at 18 years old vs Sheffield Wednesday on 14th Feb 1998 - but who is the oldest to achieve the feat? These two age records ought to be mentioned in this article TheRealGutripper (talk) 22:00, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In Andy Cole's (3) line, please move the Manchester United F.C. 9–0 Ipswich Town F.C. link from its current location (9-0) to the date (4 March 1995). With such a short link, it's easily overlooked (I originally came here to ask that you add the link), and the date is more relevant and less easter-eggy than than the score. 49.198.51.54 (talk) 06:26, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: I don't think this is possible. The date uses a template, and using a template here is recommended per guidelines. Plus, linking a date to a match doesn't seem very reasonable to me. Aaron Liu (talk) 12:04, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Opta list

[edit]

I don't know if the list has been updated, but as of 4 May 2024, Opta has a list of Premier League hat-tricks, plus trivia, here. Kingsif (talk) 23:10, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Statement seems to contradict its own source

[edit]

Regarding this sentence, "The Dubious Goals Committee has sometimes decided after a match that players have not scored hat-tricks because one of the goals was incorrectly credited to them. Southampton player Egil Østenstad was thought to have scored a hat-trick against Manchester United in 1996, but the committee ruled that one of the goals be credited as an own goal to United's Phil Neville", according to one of its sources (number 16), the own goal was actually scored by Denis Irwin, rather than Phil Neville.
