Where did all the older doll characters go?

[edit]

Why did Stacey, P.J., et al. get deleted? And where did this deluge of book and video characters come from? Shouldn't the priority be the DOLLS, rather than every character mentioned in every book or video with the Barbie logo on it? We have to draw the line somewhere, and it seems absurd to me that Stacey is gone, but some nitwit named "Charli-Bell" has been added. Someone's run amok...

Sam as a boyfriend?

[edit]

I know that's not correct, so I'm removing it. Tikallover 02:28, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wait a minute... there is no "Gelinda"! I'm removing her too. Tikallover 02:31, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Um, is there actually a "Melody" as Ken's friend? Tikallover 20:41, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From the 1 Modern Circle line of collector's dolls - Melody was described as being Ken's "best friend." -- Lampbane 19:00, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I, too, had neglected the use of THAT Melody. It's strange, but true. So where do we place the "1 Modern Circle" Simone, who is most likely NOT the same Simone from the Play Line "American Idol" line-up (Just as A.I. Tori is neither the "Generation Girl" Tori, nor the new redhead Tori in the Kelly Klub)?206.58.228.197 18:55, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Making the info more verifiable and useful

[edit]

In the short time I've been watching this page, I've noticed there seems to be a problem keeping track of the various doll characters and verifying that they really existed. I have a suggestion. Perhaps we can cite a source wherever possible (books and websites and so on), and also provide info on what particular line the doll was part of when first introduced, particularly for one-off character names. If we know that a character was part of such-and-such a pink box series or whatever, then it's easier to verify that there was such a doll in 19xx or 200x. Karen | Talk | contribs 19:20, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most listings such as this that I've seen (in price guide books, etc.) simply post a picture of the doll in question (often just a face shot) next to their name. Is this something that could be reasonably accomplished here?206.58.228.99 18:07, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I'm missing something—but doesn't a topic like this somewhat trivialize WP as a source of substantial information? Compiling retroactive surnames for a line of dolls conceived of and (famously) marketed with first names only? Under what circumstances could this be considered "useful"? – AndyFielding (talk) 11:28, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Family member "Shelly"..?

[edit]

I know that Shelly is what they call Kelly overseas, but I'm not sure that she belongs on THIS particular list. While Marina is a foreign name used for our domestic Kira, an "Ocean Friends Marina" Doll was actually sold here in the States, making her a viable addition. But if we include "Shelly", wouldn't we have to include EVERYBODY that Barbie has ever known, worldwide (names like Valerie, Bobby, and Viky spring to mind), including variations? Just asking...206.58.228.197 19:04, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tutti/Stacie

[edit]

It should be noted that whether or not someone "likes" an idea is irrelevant. If people "like" the idea of Stacie and Tutti being the same character, that's fine, but it doesn't make them the same character. STOP THINKING OF THESE CHARACTERS AS REAL PEOPLE, THEY'RE DOLLS. Get a grip. Morinth (talk) 03:01, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Tutti is Barbie's sister. Stacie is Barbie's sister. Tutti and Stacie are also BOTH on record as being the twin sister of Todd! Thus, Tutti and Stacie are (apparently) the same girl, using two different names at two different times, right? 206.58.228.46 03:44, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose that makes sense, but Stacie was very different looking from Tutti. Maybe someone who is more of an expert than I am can weigh in on this, because I have a definite pro-Tutti bias. Karen | Talk | contribs 18:53, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You! Tutti and Stacie obviously reflect the artistic and structural sensibilities of their respective eras (much the way a "Ponytail" Barbie bears very little resemblance to a "My Scene" Barbie), but I wouldn't say that their appearances are so different as to make the idea that they could be (and likely ARE) the same sister unbelievable. Tutti is a little girl with blue eyes and (often) blonde hair, Stacie is a little girl with blue eyes and (always) blonde hair. I, too, ADORE Tutti, and remain unsure why Mattel would create such ambiguity by (evidently) changing her name to "Stacie" for her '90s re-release. But the fact that Barbie only has ONE brother, Todd, and "both" Tutti and Stacie are definitively stated as being Todd's twin sister, makes this pretty much an open-and-shut case for me! :^) 206.58.228.7 01:21, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I love the idea of Tutti and Stacie being the same girl! Pulling it together with Todd works well, but don't they mess that up with Midge and Alans Wedding the kids are Todd and Kelly. § oldbarbiefan —Preceding unsigned comment added by Oldbarbiefan (talkcontribs) 01:22, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't you people get it? Tutti IS Stacie. Mattel renamed Tutti to Stacie so that she would sound less intimidating. Don't believe me? Here's a page from Barbie's OFFICIAL blog (http://alldolldup.typepad.com/all_dolld_up/2009/02/25-random-things-about-me-.html) stating the names of her sisters...and Tutti is not there. The website is owned by Mattel so there is absolutely no point arguing about its authenticity. It's also pointless having two different sisters with the names Tutti and Stacie if Mattel doesn't use the name 'Tutti' anymore. You're all confusing Barbie's history by making her have five sisters. So no one better edit this subject anymore. Give it a rest people, geez! - Ashley

I tend to agree. I basically think of Stacie as Tutti simply renamed, with Todd serving as the proof of this. Both incarnations of Todd (the child) are said to have a "twin" sister, and since one can surmise that no family would name two sons "Todd", we can reasonably assume there is only one Todd, with only one twin sister. Of course, Mattel doesn't appear to make a concerted effort to keep their characters "canon", probably assuming that 20+ years between a name change in the "play" line will go largely unnoticed, since the average child's time-frame for playing with Barbies is most likely expected to last somewhere between 5–10 years. Only die-hard collectors familiar with the history of Barbie over the last 50+ years will even notice these things. My guess is someone at Mattel probably decided "Tutti" sounded outdated and the decision was made to rename Tutti to a name that sounded more contemporary (for the time) without giving a second thought to any confusion that it might cause for those threading together an official "biography" for Barbie. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 20:49, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tutti and Stacie are separate characters. We need to not think of these characters as people, or as a continuous group from one decade to the next. Each group of dolls in the Barbie family is canon for that group only—continuity has not been maintained by Mattel, nor should we worry about it.—Morinth (talk) 22:19, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Opening Paragraph

[edit]

I had noticed that on the main Barbie doll page there was no mention of how head molds developed for Barbie are sometimes used for her friends, head molds developed for Barbie's friends are sometimes used for Barbie herself, and sometimes more than one of Barbie's friends will use the same head mold. Also, there was no mention of how names often get reused, sometimes in ways that make it difficult to determine whether they reference the same character.

Given that the reuse of names is causing confusion on this page, I thought it might be helpful to add that information here in a short opening paragraph, and explain that some identities have been muddled over the years.

If any information about reusing head molds is added, I think that an external link should be provided to the website Katti's Dolls, but that a comprehensive list of head molds should NOT be added. IMO, a comprehensive list of head molds used in the Barbie doll line is outside the scope of this encyclopedia.

On a page that is principally a list, is such an explanatary opening paragraph forbidden or discouraged? And if not, what does everyone think about its merits and drawbacks? Personally, I hesitate to add such an opening paragraph without a go-ahead from an editor or a general consensus on the discussion page, but I do think it could add value. Last names

[edit]

I see I've missed quite a bit of vandalism/fixing of vandalism! Some people...

But now I have a question: How important are characters' last names, if they are known? It appears that during the clean-up, the "Fairchild" was removed from the "Francie", and the "Carson" was left off "Tommy", as well as a few other instances (mostly in Midge's Family). And The Heart Family was edited out altogether! But all those "Generation Girl" surnames remain intact. Was this a conscious editorial decision? I'm kind of confused here...

Thanks in advance for any input/explanation that You can provide!

Take Care! 206.58.228.171 17:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think last names should be included where appropriate. If the doll has ever been described with a surname on the packaging, it is especially relevant (as is the case with the Generation Girl dolls, who had an extensive backstory and personalities). If the doll has been assigned a surname via licensed fiction such as the '60s Random House books, those names should be included. If the names do come from fiction, the source should be provided. I noticed that Christie had been given the surname O'Neill, and I had no idea where that came from (it certainly wasn't part of her original marketing). Then I saw a reference that Nikki was once described as Christie's sister, and it's clear that someone assigned the O'Neill surname to Christie in response to that. To me, that's a tenuous assignation at best, unless the character has an explicit reference in some kind of literature as having a specific surname, then the surname shouldn't be part of the "official" entry, but can be noted in the description, though of course this is an anecdotal reference and ideally should be cited. Teresa?

[edit]

Why is there no page for Teresa? She is one of Barbie's oldest (and most attractive) friends. Not to mention she offeres just as much interesting toppical information as does any one of her friends and family? She's NOT EVEN mentioned in her friend's and family link. Can we fix that? (talk) 03:55, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree with you. Besides, Teresa is Barbie's current best friend ever since Midge married Alan and had babies with him. Ashley

I just made a new article about Teresa! Please contribute if you have some things you want to put in. No vandalisms please. - Ashley

There is a list called "Steffie's friends." Although Steffie was a Barbie friend made in the 1970s, that list has nothing to do with her. In fact, the list has nothing to do with Mattel at all. I can't even find a series of dolls made by another company in which the lead was named Steffie. Why is that list here? I've also noted regular vandalism on the Heart Family list (Brie and the part about a 2010 baby), and the names of Stacie's and Skipper's friends are often completely changed. Is there a way to lock the lists? If they ARE correct, in which universe can I find this information?! (I've been collecting Barbie dolls for 30 years, so I believe I know what I am talking about.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skippercollector (talkcontribs) 12:39, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that any of Barbie's friends, except maybe Midge, rate a separate page. I think simply expanding the information on this page would be sufficient. I've always thought of this page as primarily a list of the characters that exist in doll form, though I've noticed that some non-doll fictional characters have been added since I was last active editing the page. Morinth (talk) 05:20, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I added Barbie's friends, I was surprised to see them missing.

[edit]

I added two lists, which are both incomplete, but they're a good start. I added a list of Barbie-sized friends, and a list of celebrity and fictional character friends. My expertise is mainly from 1959-1989, so I'm not really up on the more recent friends and celebrity characters. I would appreciate it if someone knowledgeable about the more recent dolls would add those. Morinth (talk) 06:49, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I, too, have tried to update the Barbie friends list, and the lists were removed by ClueBot. Is there a way to override ClueBot, such as contacting a real person at Wikipedia to show him or her my list? My lists can all be verified, either by Internet references, or book references, or even my own doll collection. http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=List_of_Barbie%27s_friends_and_family&oldid=448631260 69.61.214.84 (talk) 23:59, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Mary/skippercollector69.61.214.84 (talk) 23:59, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried to add some additional "celebrity" and "character" dolls. I haven't added any of the Disney characters, mainly because many (such as Cinderella for example) have been released and re-released over and over again over the years, and it's a complicated task to track down the release dates for each of them. I may see what I can do about adding the Disney characters, but, for now, I believe the "celebrity" and "character" dolls should be split into two groups and listed last. In most cases, they're not technically part of the Barbie friends & family "universe", and I believe the various sub-lists should (loosely) follow the "Barbie family and principal characters" list. The way it's listed now, listing the "celebrity" and "character" dolls right after Barbie's "friends" just takes the reader out of Barbie's immediate universe in the middle of the list. I see this talk page doesn't appear to get a lot of traffic, but I'll make a little list below of the order I believe would make sense for the casual reader to follow. If I don't see any objections within the next few weeks, then I'll go ahead take a look at what I can do to tidy things up. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 20:49, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested article name change

[edit]

The title adopts an in-universe view of the fictional "Barbie" character. I propose the article be given a more factually descriptive title, such as "List of Barbie-brand characters". This specific phrasing is somewhat awkward, so I encourage others to propose better alternatives, but my main point is that the article should have a more encyclopedic title than the present one. 138.16.32.85 (talk) 04:22, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
