Baltic German vs. Russian
[edit]The article states that Otto v. Kotzebue was "a Baltic German in the service of Russia", as though Kotzebue were employed by a foreign power. The Baltic German nobility derives from Medieval times, when the Teutonic Knights were in control of the present Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). In Kotzebue's day, however, these states were part of the Russian Empire, so it was natural for Kotzebue, who was born in Tallinn, Estonia, to be "in the service of Russia". One wouldn't say, e.g., "Colonel David Stirling (1915-90), a Scot in the service of Britain", would one?--Death Bredon (talk) 11:35, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
