Some questions re: upgraded article

[edit]

Early years:

  • " drafted and translated plays". Why "drafted"? Is that intended to be different from "wrote"?
  • I take it that none of his plays were a strong success, or else we would say so?
  • "After a few years he resigned from the civil service" -- Can we add a date showing (about) when his writing/journalism career began/civil service job ended?
  • The last paragraph of the section (which I would move to the following section) is mostly about the school rather than Barnes. Can we condense the school's history in that paragraph (it has its own article), perhaps like this:
Barnes's sisters Violet and Irene married influential actor-managers – respectively Arthur Bourchier and Dion Boucicault, Jr. – who were instrumental in securing for Barnes the post of secretary and administrator of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (then called "Mr Tree's Academy of Dramatic Art") in 1909.[citing ODNB and Times] The academy was founded by the actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree in 1904 [citing The Stage] as a British equivalent of the Paris Conservatoire.[citing The Stage] He succeeded the first secretary of the academy, George Bancroft, son of Squire Bancroft and Marie Wilton.[citing Westminster Gazette]

We say that he was engaged as "secretary and administrator", but we never say when he became Principal or Director. Can you please clarify?

Title: From the title of the article, I would assume that he was a theatre director. Can we move it to either (academic) or (academy director) or (principal)?

I've eliminated the heading "Royal Academy of Dramatic Art", and deleted the TOC tag, and promoted two sections from L4 to L3.

We say that he protected the Academy from taxation, but wouldn't the law decree protect all arts institutions and theatres? -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:16, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

One further thought: The article is obviously much improved, but there is little about Barnes's personality, home life, interests outside of the school, retirement, etc. If you see anything in your sources about these, it would add more flavor to the article. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:58, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
