What next?

[edit]

Now that that is done, I'm wondering what is the way forward for this page, pinging Ealdgyth and Montanabw for their thoughts. Kazakhstan reports 6 indigenous breeds to DAD-IS, as well as the Akhal-Teke and Karabair. The Jabe and Aday, at the moment described here as sub-types, are reported as separate breeds, and there are plenty of sources that confirm that. I suggest making separate pages for those and for the Kushum; we already have one for the Kustanair; I haven't so far found enough about the Mugalzhar to make a stub. What I can't see my way through is what should be in this page, or how to distinguish generalisations about Kazakh horses from facts about this specific breed (if indeed that is what it is). Any strong feelings about any of that? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 23:01, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I generally favor putting sub-types or closely-related breeds together, particularly where they are going to be stubs anyway and here, the weakness of the DAD-IS is that it blindly reports whatever various nations tell them as "breeds" when they may actually be simply separate strains. So I'm not sure we need to spin off the Jabe and Adaev at this point, though I'd have no objection to the others if they have any source material. (My example being their willingness to list the "Egyptian Arabian" as a separate "breed" for the USA when it is merely a separate bloodline with a particularly aggressive marketing group) - but I admit that is because I personally like better quality longer articles over Balkanized stubs. Other than that, if you want to create new articles, I have no objection (but can you kindly add them to the List of horse breeds when you do?) We currently have articles as follows (see what's redlinked) Adaev, Akhal-Teke (which, technically, is not native to Kazakhstan, it's a Turkmenistan breed), Jabe horse/Dzhab (Existing Jabe redirects to an Irish band), Karabair (also not an "ethnic" Kazakh breed), Kazakh horse (this article), Kushum, Kustanai horse (Kustanai redirects to Kostanay), Mugalzhar horse (Mugalzhar redirects to Mugodzhar Hills. I also welcome @Ealdgyth:'s thoughts on this. Montanabw(talk) 00:17, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm about to step out for a bit and probably will be scarce over the weekend... I'll let this cogitate in my brain a bit and let everyone know my greatly important (snickers) thoughts later... Ealdgyth - Talk 00:25, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The Kustanai article is at Kustanair, please don't ask me why. And yes, I should have made clearer above that I do know that the Akhal-Teke and Karabair are not Kazakh breeds. Kazakhstan reports 8 breeds, of which six are native and two (those two) are not. They must have some Thoroughbreds too, or they wouldn't have put them on the stamp. I'm aware of some of the shortcomings of DAD-IS; but in general I think we can rely on each country to know what breeds it thinks it has. If the Kazakhs think they have these 6 (of which five are pretty well documented), I think we should take their word for it. As for the Eqyptian Arabian, the only country that reports it to DAD-IS is Australia. Egypt just calls it "Arab". Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 00:54, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No clue on Kustanai(r)< I'll put in a RM (apparently it has been previously moved) if you support the move (or you can and I will support). My take is keep Adeav and Jabe/Dzhab here, maybe creating redirects that we can spin off into new articles once we have more than a paragraph on each. Create new articles for the rest? Measurements

[edit]

Need to remember to do three-way conversions on measurements; US readers don't always know the metric system, so need inches, etc., just a reminder that we spent months helping the convert template gurus get this all programmed properly, might as well use it.
