Pronounced???
[edit]Is it "jolly - et" or Joe-Lee-et"? 99.26.88.201 (talk) 11:52, 24 January 2010 (UTC) Martha Mae
- Chapter 2, Article I, Section 2-8 of the Code of Ordinances, City of Joliet, Illinois provides, "The only official, correct and proper pronunciation and spelling of the name of this city shall be Jo-li-et; the accent on the first syllable, with the "o" in the first syllable pronounced in its long sound, as in the words "so," "no" and "foe" and any other pronunciations to be discouraged as interfering with the desired uniformity in respect to the proper pronunciation of the name of this city. (Code 1939, § 1.127; Code 1961, § 1-17)" Squideshi (talk) 22:59, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
Layman's answer: Joe-Lee-et is the proper pronunciation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Soco 79 (talk • contribs) 15:12, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
incomprehensible part
[edit]This is incomprehensible, so i can't fix it: " In 1833 Joliet, following the Black Hawk War, Charles Reed built a cabin along the west side of the Des Plaines River. " --Espoo (talk) 09:26, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Article needs location map
[edit]I see that some changes have been made regarding Illinois place name location maps. Joliet really needs one as it's the fourth-largest city in Illinois. Bumm13 (talk) 03:52, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

City seal and flag image
[edit]I am proposing that a city seal and flag should be displayed in the infobox. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:FF10:4170:780C:E5DA:3119:DA5A (talk) 04:19, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
ExxonMobil
[edit]I believe ExxonMobil is located in Elwood, not Joliet. Could someone please confirm this.

Infobox Photo Collage
[edit]Recently, the image for the page Joliet, Illinois has been changed to a collage featuring historical sites and local attractions around the city. @Magnolia677 has raised concerns that the image is of low quality. I, for one, believe it gives readers a better scope of what The City of Joliet has to offer. I was born and raised in Joliet and, given that it's the third largest city in Illinois, I believe the original, grainy photo of the Will County Courthouse does not accurately represent what the city is like today. If any other users have any issues with the new photo, please share them in the talk page before reverting previous edits. Have a lovely day. 2601:243:600:5360:4A0F:947E:4D93:BE48 (talk) 16:04, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- I agree with Magnolia that the current photo is higher-quality (especially in terms of resolution) and preferable for the Infobox. OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:13, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- is it okay if I do that. I just think the Aurora page looks so much better and I just want to give readers a more interactive experience. DosEquis630708 (talk) 16:18, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Would it be okay if I made an interactive array of images for Joliet, similar to the infobox for the page Aurora, Illinois? I don't mean to step on anyone's toes. I'm new to editing but really wanna get better at it, I just feel that, as the third largest city in Illinois, Joliet has more to read about/view than the courthouse alone (which has since been demolished). Please let me know your thoughts, both of you. Again, not trying to step on anyone's toes, just trying to improve my hometown's page in any way I can. If there's anyway the three of us can collaborate I would love to do that. Let me know what you think and have a lovely day! DosEquis630708 (talk) 16:23, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Per WP:CONSENSUS, please get a consensus here before making change to the lede image. The current consensus is that the existing photo is of higher quality than the collage you tried to add. Aurora, Illinois uses a montage of individual high-quality images, not a flattened single-image collage like you tried to add. Additionally, you don't need to ping us every time you leave a new message here. OhNoitsJamie Talk 19:14, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you or any other users. Just trying to learn the ropes and make improvements. Do you think it would be a good idea to create a montage of individual high-quality images for Joliet, Illinois similar to Aurora, Illinois? All of the images I used in the collage are licensed under Creative Commons. Might I also add that the current image is of a building that was demolished in August of 2024. Please let me know what you think, and again, I'm sorry if I upset you by pinging you @Ohnoitsjamie, just trying to make the page more informative and possibly get some tips on how to better my future edits :) DosEquis630708 (talk) 23:27, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Magnolia677 if you have anything to add please let me know. I would really like to work together to find a more relevant image(s) that is/are of good resolution/quality. I hope you both have a lovely evening! DosEquis630708 (talk) 00:10, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've disabled pings from you so you needn't bother again. Not sure why you would ping me after I just asked you not to. You are welcome to suggest alternative images on the talk page for consideration for the infobox. OhNoitsJamie Talk 01:05, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your help. I wasn't trying to be impolite, didn't mean to bother you. Just wanted to make sure all parties are involved in the conversation. I will go ahead and do a mockup array of images and see what everyone thinks. Again, please be respectful, I am new to this and am only trying to help better the page :) DosEquis630708 (talk) 01:25, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Magnolia677 I was able to work with a few images from the previous flattened single-image collage, as well as additional images in the creative comments to form a more high-quality montage. Keep in mind this is just a rough draft; link text will be added once edited in. Let me know what you think or if there are any images you would like to swap out/position differently.

@DosEquis630708: Thanks so much for doing that. The pictures aren't super, but all the more reason to drive to Joliet with a camera next summer. And using individual photos--instead of one image--makes it possible to make changes. What do others think? Magnolia677 (talk) 11:22, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ideally a collage would include some photos of the city itself; prominent thoroughfares or landmarks as the Aurora, Illinois one does. The prison and bridge photos are OK. The others, not so much. I think we could find better photos of the Iron Works and Speedway (the photo at Chicagoland Speedway is slightly better). Additionally, please keep the conversation here. I don't want to be pinged, and you don't need to leave a message on my talk page again. I follow this page, and if I wish to continue participating in this conversation I will. OhNoitsJamie Talk 12:30, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sounds good!! I actually still live in Joliet (believe it or not) and have a fairly good camera. I am planning on attending a Demolition derby event at Chicagoland Speedway in the near future, and Joliet Iron and Steel Works is now a public park, which is not far from my house. The iconic "Kicks on 66" sign and Blues Brothers statues are located at Route 66 Park, so I'll be sure to swing by there as well. To provide more variety, I'll take multiple new shots and we can decide which one turned out the best. I'll also see if I can get some better shots of Harrah's Joliet. You can't really tell from the current image in Commons, but Harrah's is actually an old-fashioned Riverboat casino. I will make sure to give updates and keep everyone in the loop. As always, have a lovely day!! DosEquis630708 (talk) 13:53, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
