[edit]Jacobite Rebellion
On the face of it, the statement that Forbes was responsible for Rattray's release looks implausible. He was not a supporter of the Hanoverian succession, and was imprisoned as a suspected Jacobite until well into 1746. Moreover, he was not a bishop at this time, but merely a young episcopalian clergyman at Leith. The subsequent career of Forbes made his Jacobite loyalties very clear.
The intercession, according to Forbes's memoir, was not made by him but by Duncan Forbes, Lord Culloden, the President of the Court of Session.
