John's first wife
[edit]Just like John's parentage has been guessed at for many years, I believe this is also the case for his first wife. The History of Hingham, as well as the Hobart Journal, are silent when it comes to her name (both given and maiden), the latter calling her "John Leavits wife" when she "dyed" on 3 July 1646 and was buried on the 5th. An article on John and Thomas Leavitt in the NEHGR (v67 pg77) only says "possibly, according to Pope, the Mary Lovitt of the Dorchester Church". A write-up in the Great Migration series says this Mary Lovett was admitted to the Dorchester church about 1638, but John had already removed to Hingham by then, and "this church admission is almost certainly not for the first wife".
Who she really was, we'll probably never know! The27thMaine (talk) 23:49, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- You are exactly right. Those sources only hinted at who she might have been, and now her identity will probably be a mystery forever. I've seen speculation that she possibly came from the Lovett family settled on the North Shore at Salem/Beverly. If only Daniel Cushing or Hobart had seen fit to enter a footnote! :-) Regards and holiday best wishes to you and all yours,MarmadukePercy (talk) 00:18, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Another "John Leavitt"!
[edit]There exists another person John Leavitt (* 1956 in Kansas City, USA); he is meanwhile a famous composer. I'm missing an article about him. Johann Jakob Pfeifendeckel (talk) 09:51, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
