Merge suggestion

Unless all college football players (or, at least, all starters for notable teams) qualify for articles, I would suggest that Mario Danelo be merged into this article. MisfitToys 21:54, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Because of Mario's "newsworthy" death, and the fact that he apparently broke some records in his short career, I think they should be separate articles. At this point, Mario is more notable than his father. I'd say hold on to the current separate articles pending the outcome of the investigation into Mario's death, and make a decision then. I'm not sure how you can say he was more notable than his father, who played 10 years in the NFL and scored 639 points. And despite the NCAA records, Mario never even made all-conference, let alone All-American. MisfitToys 02:57, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm not capable of competently understanding the significance of NFL records or statistics. Obviously Joe's contribution to football is much greater than his son's. At the moment, Mario is the subject of national media attention, which usually would merit the creation of an article. Sans mysterious and untimely death, I don't think Mario would meet the criteria of notability that would merit an article on Wikipedia. If Mario was nothing more than Joe Danelo's son, and he died, that might qualify for a merge, but since Mario was a significant college football player, dont merge with Joe's page, otherwise, any other son of a former NFL player, for any reason, should have their pages merged too with their dad's page. (same applies with any other mother/father of any other sport). Pretty much, even if the death didnt happen, I still wouldnt vote for a merge on the mere fact that Mario was a significant player. Does it help that he holds the NCAA single season records for PAT attempts and made extra points? I'm not for merging and making him a footnote in his dad's article. --Bobak 03:36, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

There's no reason why his accomplishments can't be completely covered in the articles for the 2006 and 2007 Rose Bowls, in addition to the one for his father. College football players do not automatically qualify for Wikipedia articles, even if they set some kind of record; achievement of All-American status would likely be a minimal requirement. If his accomplishments would have to be spread across 3 larger articles, none of which are really a tight fit for what would need to be included (your response to season records is to include them in Rose Bowl articles, why is that sensible?), then it is far more reasonable to give that person their own full entry. Also, a suspicious or mysterious death raises the notability of the person involved. For example, there will continue to be news reports on Danelo well into next season. There will probably be a remembrance of some sort held for him at the beginning of next season. There will be video segments during the halftimes of games and during pregame shows, particularly when USC plays teams from other media markets. How odd will it be to someone who sees such a segment to not find an entry for him on wikipedia? They'll be redirected to a couple Rose Bowl pages with a short line about his untimely death. The accomplishments are relatively minor, and could be summed up in a short paragraph. I'll add that the records should probably also be noted in the article 2005 NCAA Division I-A football season. MisfitToys 02:33, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Mario and Joe Danelo are different people. Obviously someone found Mario relevant enough to write in the article, update it the day the coroner's office gave the resuts of his BAL, and I found him interesting enough to look up. Can you imagine how many people a day do this and dont come in here to coment on the merge? novamba 15:49, 5 February 2007
