Uh I, the first part of this is on the Jamiroquai website, doesn't wikipedia not allow to not use copyrighted work? Well if no-one replies with a GOOD answer, within 1 week, I'm taking the bits from the website off. (unsigned comment)

Neutrality?

[edit]

This article couldn't be any more biased! Just look at how it's written, it's less informative and more 'jay kay is amazing!' This shouldn't be a place for fans to talk about how great their favourite artist is, it's an encylopaedia!

but wait! doesn't jamiroquai roxor your soxors? like, omigod! :P

Oh ******* ******, will somebody PLEASE delete the blatant 'fandalism' on this page?!

Would anyone object to me deleting the entire article and re-writing it?

Please do, this is an encyclopedia, not a fansite. (sigh) ProhibitOnions 14:38, August 15, 2005 (UTC)

No, this hasn't been written by a fan - rather, it's been copied from some commercial source (the official band website it seems).--Deadworm222 19:27, September 9, 2005 (UTC)
I find it amazing that no mention is made of his biggest controversy and something he is VERY sensitive about..and that's Jay Kay has ripped off Stevie Wonders voice. NO mention here or on the Wiki page of the band. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.207.116.55 (talk) 18:11, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am tagging this page for cleanup and neutrality

Problems: neutrality, possible copyright violation (I cannot verify this), and (extremely) poorly written. IR Mongoose 11:32, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think this is now NPOV - agree? Still not brilliantly written, but I can't be bothered. On a point below, I am aware of Kay repeatedly being referred to as "The Twat In The Hat", but it's not worth including without a source. Dancarney 10:34, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Twenty Billion Albums

[edit]

Typo or hyperbole?

  • I believe Jason Kay only ever released eight albums as part of Jamiroquai (spelling?), and I doubt anyone could physically release 20,000,000,000 albums, so I think it is hyperbole. How can you mistype to such a large extent?

It says twenty million, not billion. And its referring to units sold. Learn to read.

Dispite the fact that I am a fan of the group, (which just so happens to be part of the reason I looked up this page in the first place) I believe that It needs to be rewritten with more acurate details. The part of the article reguarding Jason Kays personal history is too summarized, too general. I can't really take much from it.

I agree: this isn't the article for Jamiroquai, it's the article for Jay Kay. (I only came here to see if that was his real name. I honestly can't believe it is.) As for 20,000,000 units, I don't see a reference for that figure, but it's not suprising. Jamiroquai albums frequently go multiple platinum. I know in Australia (my own country) A Funk Odyssey went 3xP at least.

"Kay is well known for many things, including his love of cars. He has a large collection of sport cars, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, Mercedes, and Aston Martin. This love of motors was expressed with the release of the album "Travelling without Moving", where the cover featured an adaptation of the "Buffalo Man" logo and the Ferrari crest."
this is irrelavant.

The Twat In The Hat

[edit]

Anyone else remember Jay Kay being referred to in that respect? --Smallbone10 02:23, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I recall hearing him referred to as "The Prat In The Hat" when I lived in NZ, probably because "Twat" didn't rhyme (using NZ pronounciation). But yeah, I remember hearing Radio DJs use the term jokingly to refer to him... I'm glad someone else remembers, because I thought I might have been mis-remembering it otherwise! --Commander Zulu 11:49, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Um... No mention of his hats?

[edit]

You know, Jay Kay is seen wearing a hat, or at least some sort of headgear, almost every time he is seen in the media. (This is especially true in the music videos that he appears in.) So, why is there no mention of that yet in the article? I would love to add that if I could say more than just, "Jay Kay wears a hat almost every time he is seen in the media".

company cars

[edit]

So let me get this right, he campaigns for Greenpeace and FOTE, yet he drives around in a fleet of "supercars". What do they do, 9mpg? What a fucking hypocrite. 82.163.180.141 00:31, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the supercars he owns run on super unleaded, and as such, are actually cleaner than normal cars. Get your facts straight. 82.32.50.164 13:57, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They may "actually" be "cleaner", but they consume a hell of a lot more fuel per mile don't they...so it's like saying that "Alcho pops have less alcohol in them, so they don't get you drunk...", No? They do if you drink enough of them. Get your facts straight.
Which car does not run on unleaded?
Perhaps he's offsetting his carbon emissions. ;) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.204.119.67 (talk) 21:19, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps? Source?
How about adding a "Controversy" section to describe this situation? Netrat_msk (talk) 11:24, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say add a criticism section. Cite some sources, everybody is aware that Jay Kay is one of the biggest hypocrites in the public eye. So what if he runs them on super unleaded? It's just higher octane level unleaded, gives more burnable performance, allowing him to drive even faster and burn even more petrol. I suppose he meant well until he got a taste of the lifestyle. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.92.241.58 (talk) 09:22, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If Jay has about what 15 cars, he can't possibly be driving all of them at the same time. While they probably do get poor mpg, he's only using one and keeping 14 off the streets, so I'd say his 'fleet' kind of balances itself out. he can drive them all at the same time while touring.

Regardless of 1 or 100, cars burn oil. Yes, even electrics (in the manufacturing thereof, and in the production of their electricity). A Wiki article about being against climate change, yet loving cars would be nice .... I'm one of those myself.--Atikokan (talk) 13:04, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quitting Music

[edit]

I am wondering if this is accurate, becuase I read on many webpages and newspaper articles that he's quitting, yet on the the 2 main websites, it says he has no intention of quitting. I'm wondering if anyone can clear this up, if it doesn't on it's own during the next couple of days. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.178.196.213 (talk) 01:25, 3 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

It was falsely reported that he was quitting music, he was quoted out of context by headline hunting journalists. I'd say his own website is authoritative. Best to leave it on the page so people don't try and add it again I think, as it clearly says it was later denied. camelworks 12:44, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Returning from holiday home in... Perthshire???

[edit]

He was clocked doing 105mph on the A9, apparently near Dalnaspidal junction which is in Perthshire. However, his holiday home is a good 200 miles north of there, near Gairloch, I could be more specific, but because I don't already see the exact location of his house on the internet, I don't want to be the one that puts it there. I'm not a fan of his, but I entirely understand how he came to be driving at 105mph on the A9, he just had a bit more power than most and was unlucky enough to be seen by the police. Alternatively 18:13, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why the speed limit needs a citation. It's the A9, on a dual-carriageway stretch. It's 70mph. Gordonjcp (talk) 14:28, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

This article is about Jay Kay only, not Jamiroquai. All of the recently added things which have just been copied from the Jamiroquai article aren't needed here. TomGreen 11:07, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

  • As far as I am concerned, Jay Kay is Jamiroquai and has always been. It then became a band when the instrument players became famous. But now that 50 billion members are no longer in the band that were famous its just Jay as a solo singer going by the Pseudonym Jamiroquai. He is a solo singer. As far as 1998 and above.(Pleasantview 05:19, 4 May 2007 (UTC)).[reply]

Jay Kay takes the JAMIROQUAI name

[edit]

Ever since 1998 Jamiroquai was officially Jay Kay. Other members weren't notified and if I remember he is more notified as a Jamiroquai. He is the only one featured in recent music videos. If it were a band don't you think the whole band would be in music videos since 1998?(Pleasantview 05:14, 4 May 2007 (UTC)).[reply]

Actually music videos does not prove anything, except his extreme narcissisms and ambition. Please note that some of the songs featured on 2001's A Funk Odyssey and 2006's Dynamite are co-written with other band members like Smith, Fyffe, Johnson and Harris (prooflink). But even without such input, Jamiqoquai would be considered a backup band for Jay rather than his stage name. Netrat_msk (talk) 11:38, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

imo being in music video is not exactly equal to being a member of a band and vice versa....

Fine by me the page is being redirected again.(Pleasantview 08:31, 7 May 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Jamiroquai is the band in my opinion. Does not matter who was there in the beginning, who has left, and who is there now, the band Jay Kay fronts is Jamiroquai. Jay Kay is a great lyricist, but he can not play bass, drums or guitar so there's no way he wrote the music himself, right? I think a lot of people mistakenly call Jay 'Jamiroquai' because of the slight phonetic resemblance between his name and the band name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.92.241.58 (talk) 09:28, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

His father

Hello everyone! I see that here is father is presented as being Luís Silveira, but in the Portuguese Wikipedia they say it was the Portuguese musician Luís Waddington. Is it the same man? Cheers. The Ogre (talk) 12:42, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Step father's name

[edit]

Guys you might want to change your information.

On his mother's Wiki page and according to an older interview, his step-father's name in Mervyn Kay, whereas you still have his step-father's name as James Royal.

If you can please clear this up that would be loads helpful to those of us who are confused.

Cheetham

[edit]

If his mother's maiden name is Pringle, his biological father's surname is Silveira (or perhaps Waddington) and his stepfather's surname is Kay then does anybody know where the birth name Cheetham comes from? I think the fact template on this is well deserved. Many websites state that Jay Kay was born Jason Cheetham but nobody explains why.

I have checked the England & Wales, Birth Index: 1837-1983. Of the births registered in January–March 1970, none were for Jason Kay, Jason Silveira or Jason Waddington. Jason Pringle was registered, with the mother's maiden name being Pringle, but this was registered in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. However, the birth of Jason Luis J. Cheetham was registered in the district of Barton. As well as being a geographical match, the middle name is the same as the biological father's first name. What does not fit is that the mother's maiden name is also registered as being Cheetham. If this discrepancy can be explained then maybe we have a verifiable source that Cheetham is Jay Kay's birth name. Alternatively, this could be a coincidence and the origin of a mistake that has been repeated all over the internet. By the way, has anybody written a book about this guy? Labalius (talk) 00:52, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If he changed his legal name at a young age, then his birth name is irrelevant except as a point of trivia, and certainly should not be mentioned in the opening sentence. As a point of trivia, it would need a better citation than this original research. -- Tim Starling (talk) 03:54, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Karen Kay's mother, Edith Pringle, passed away when Karen was a child. After living with an aunt and their family, Karen Kay was adopted by a Preston-based family named Cheetham, which became her adoptive surname. 0zero9nine (talk) 00:42, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Environmental hypocrisy

[edit]

I've moved the statement regarding environmental hypocrisy from the lead to the section on cars - not least because the link is dead, but because such an accusation should not be in the lead section of an article when only backed up with an article from Yahoo Cars (which now apparently doesn't exist). Mato (talk) 23:12, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure I'd call this "Environmental hypocrisy"; numerous celebrities are pro-car and anti-global warming .... at the same time. Perhaps a Wiki article on just this particular conundrum?--Atikokan (talk) 13:08, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace?

[edit]

The main source that is cited for his birthplace says he was born in Blackburn:

"Karen Kay refuses to give interviews about her son, who was also born in the town"

Yet the Wikipedia article regularly states he was born in Stretford, Manchester?

IMDB and what is AFAICT is his Official FB page both say Stretford. Can someone double check this and fix this please?--CheShA (talk) 18:09, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jay Kay himself tends to say that he was born in Manchester, which includes Stretford (technically, it's on the border of Manchester). Blackburn is outside Manchester and not part of Greater Manchester. It's important to note that Karen Kay herself didn't confirm Kay was born in Blackburn in that article. So since that local newspaper is the only source that claims he was born in Blackburn, we shouldn't change Kay's birthplace. Not until we have the actual confirmation that he was born in Blackburn, anyway. Thanks. 0zero9nine (talk) 03:02, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Someone recently added a couple of Jewish categories, citing a 2008 Independent article which claims that JK attended the Jewish Free School as a pupil. Handily, the JFS website has a searchable database of alumni, but finding no record of JK having attended, I question the reliability of this report. Another obvious inconsistency is that he was raised in Manchester. JFS is based in London and is not a boarding school, so unless he commuted ~400 miles daily between London and Manchester then it's likely the Independent article was in error. Finally, although the school is "Jewish", the official admittance policy (according to the Independent) is that it only gives "preference" to Jewish students. Consequently, even if it can be proven that JK was a pupil, it doesn't necessarily follow that he's Jewish.

As there are no other sources that I'm aware of to support the claim of Jewish heritage, I intend to remove these parts from the article in due course. As a courtesy to the person who made these edits, I'll wait to see if they have a response. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Icegrommet (talkcontribs) 15:54, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I feel I should pipe up. Jay Kay wasn't brought up in Manchester. He was brought up in Essex, Devon and wherever his mother's career took them, and they did live in London during his mid-teens (approx. 14 to 17).
That said, I investigated the Jewish claim after reading Guardian, Independent and The Face articles - all three state that he attended Jews' Free School - and discovered a number of anecdotal sources that assert he isn't Jewish. Those sources explain that his mother's adoptive family are Jewish and they raised Kay's mother as one, which in turn had her involving Kay with various Jewish youth activities. As to whether Kay is Jewish himself, I still can't find anything non-anecdotal to back this up. 0zero9nine (talk) 19:17, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds plausible. Could you provide the link to that source please? Icegrommet (talk) 22:28, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The community forum at the Jewish Chronicle (http://www.thejc.com), but they have removed the entire forum (which was where I found anecdotal information, about four years ago). I've checked the Way Back Machine (web.archive.org), but it doesn't seem to archive any forum. The JC's forum deletion, as well as the fact all info are anecdotal, is the reason why I didn't add those details to Kay's entry all this time.
In any case, I've discovered today - thanks to your question that had me re-investigating this - that Kay didn't attend JFS, according to former JFS pupil Benjamin Cohen, Channel Four News's Technology Editor: 'The fact merry-go-round underminding Wikipedia' (eighth paragraph, specifically). :D 0zero9nine (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 00:53, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent sleuthing my friend, that's some impressive Google-fu you have there! So let me get this straight; a rumour started, most likely on an internet forum, which was then inserted without a source into Wikipedia, which led to the press picking up on the "fact" and publishing it. Now this "fact" has a "reliable source" to support it and so what started as a rumour with no primary source now passes the verifiability test. This has been and continues to be a serious problem for Wikipedia. I've seen the exact same thing happen with the Bernie Ecclestone article, although it was the BBC and the Times who were incompetent then. Truly appalling journalism...
In light of this new development, and given that no reliable sources exist to support the claim that Jay Kay (or his mother for that matter) is Jewish, I've gone ahead and removed these claims from the article. I for one applaud your efforts in helping to unravel this tangled mess - if only all Wiki editors (and certain journalists) were as vigilant as yourself. Icegrommet (talk) 14:48, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

... sometimes incorrectly referred to as Jamiroquai

[edit]

Can anyone demonstrate that this is true to a notable extent? I grew up with Jamiroquai (I mean at the same time, and listening to them), and never encountered a soul who confessed to thinking that this was the name of the lead singer. Whereas there may be the odd befuddled soul out there, I'm not sure that qualifies as encyclopedic; rather, I'd want evidence that this was a common misconception to feel it belonged in the article. In light of this, I'd like to delete the comment, but am unsure as to protocol. Could someone tell me whether there should be a vote on this, or I should delete the sentence? I'll check back on this page in a while, and if nobody has made any comment, I'll delete the remark. Ché (talk) 17:41, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As nobody has responded to this, I am deleting the remark in question Ché (talk) 19:23, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is an extremely common misconception in the UK. Jamiroquai was referred to as a singular person during the band's introduction on the X Factor a couple of years ago. I will try to find references so that the statement can be re-instated. Tom Green (talk) 17:18, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I guess it is noteworthy that Jay Kay has released a video to explain he was not part of the American domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol Building in Washington. People had speculated Kay was a ringleader in the chaos at the Capitol building. Jake Angeli, dressed in a hat with horns, animal fur as a headdress and his face painted in red, white and blue, has the term Jamiroquai trending on Twitter after his image was broadcast globally and his look mistaken for the Jamiroquai singer.
