"Redmond was a natural supporter of the Open University as he had gained most of his engineering qualifications at night school". If this remarkable man had attended Oxbridge, I dare say there would have been at least a paragraph about his time spent beneath the so-called "dreaming spires". Where did he attend "night school" and what were the engineering qualifications he obtained there? While studying GCE advanced level French and German in the early 1960s in a secondary school where only the latter modern foreign languages were taught, I learned basic Russian after a hard day's work by attending weekly adult education evening classes at a different secondary school, so I understand the effort and commitment involved in pursuing such courses of study during "unsocial hours".
