Map of wrecks incorrect
[edit]I noticed that the map of wrecks in Ironbottom Sound indicates the location of USS Minneapolis (CA-36), which, though damaged, did not sink at the Battle of Tassafaronga, and survived the war to be scrapped in 1959. Ideally, someone should correct or replace this map. Jrt989 (talk) 03:36, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
You are right about the Minneapolis. I posted a similar comment to the shipwrecks project page a month or so ago. I've since noticed another issue with the map that probably calls for some additional explanation. The map places the wreck of USS LST-342 up near Tulagi, which is correct - sort of. The list of shipwrecks contained in the article does not mention LST-342, which is correct - sort of. LST-342 was actually not sunk in Savo Sound, but elsewhere in the Solomons. She was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, and blown in half. The stern section sank, but the bow section remained floating, and was eventually towed to its current location and beached. The U.S. Navy salvaged what they could, and left the rest. So...the ship was not sunk here, but HALF of the wreck is in fact located approximately as shown on the map. I would suggest a clarifying note of some sort in the article about this, as well as about the U.S.S. Minneapolis error. Kenives99 (talk) 00:30, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- You should be aware that there are many inaccuracies as to the position and/or the names of certain shipwrecks on that map. Offhand, I can see 10 that I know of that are marked in the wrong position, and that is without checking the locations of the wreck's that Dr Robert Ballards expedition found in deep water! In my opinion that map should be removed altogether until you get the locations right so you are not (unintentionally or not) disseminating incorrect information. However re Minneapolis. After being torpedoed the bow of the Minnie was cut off and left lying on the bottom in Tulagi Harbor not far from where the wreck mark is.
- My uncle served on the USS Minneapolis as Petty Officer and Fire Director. In agreement with the above comments, the map is incorrect. The "Fighting Minnie" was severely damaged in the Battle of Tassafaronga, but was repaired and served in every major Pacific battle except Iwo, eventually receiving 17 Battle Stars. The only part of the Minnie that remains in Iron Bottom Sound is the bow section which they cut off after it was peeled away by a torpedo in the Battle of Tassafaronga.
