Misleading title
[edit]"International propagation of conservative Sunni Islam"
The title is outwardly misleading giving a perception that the XVIII century wahhabism, a khawarij thought, is a "conservative Sunni Islam." Sunni Islam did well for 1100-1200 years before the emergence of the Saudi wahhabi thought. Wahhabism labels everybody as infidels and apostates, not only Shias but also Sufis and non-wahhabi Sunni ulama. Al-Qaeda, Daesh, Boko Haram, wahhabi Chechens managed to kill hundreds, if not thousands, of Sunni clerics who opposed their deviant belief. There's many conservative Sunni muslims that have nothing to do with the XVIII century, Saudi ideology, that ideologically runs contradictionary to the historical Sunni Islamic belief. why the title
[edit]This is an article about the international growth of the influence of Wahhabism, along with similar groups (Muslim Brotherhood being the most famous) that have worked in tandem with Saudi Arabia over the decades (as mentioned in the article the Muslim Brotherhood now is very much at odds with Saudi Arabia, but was not for many years). Those groups have had significant doctrinal differences from Wahhabism, so some sort of umbrella term was needed. I chose "conservative Sunni" as it seems to me that the unifying idea of the movement was "conservative/strict/puritanical interpretations of Sunni Islam" (as is noted in the first sentence of the article).
Yes, the movement has splinter tendencies or groups that are very violent and Takfiri (Al-Qaeda, Daesh, Boko Haram), and yes, I'm sure at least some of their opponents among the Sufi or "Popular Islam" consider themselves to be conservative, but overall I thought "conservative" was the most accurate term to describe the movement. --BoogaLouie (talk) 18:58, 6 February 2017 (UTC) BoogaLouie (talk) 19:22, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
- Change
- Note: article name was changed to International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism by Hartman456 here. Some discussion would have been nice Hartman. Salafism and Wahhabism don't really fit Jamati or Ikhwan. --BoogaLouie (talk) 17:00, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- BoogaLouie, yes, Hartman456 should first discuss move changes that are likely to be contested. This is per WP:Requested moves. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 09:40, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
article too big now
[edit]Greetings @Magpiepb:
posting you because of your efforts to expand the International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism article. The article is now over 240kb. Was thinking the Influence by region/country section should be forked off so the article can be trimmed. (I'm really the one responsible for making that section so big.)
My question: Which do you think would be better -- creating new separate articles by region, or by country?
i.e. create a International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism in Africa, or separate International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism in Sudan, International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism in Algeria, etc.
An International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism in Eastern Europe/Balkans, or separate International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism in Albania, International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism in Bosnia, etc. --BoogaLouie (talk) 19:10, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- thank you, agree. My initial thought is that it be split into two articles International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism, by activity (or leave title as is) and International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism, by country. In this way the original (pre May 2017) International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism remains and the International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism, by country illustrates, in one place, the extent of the international propagation. I note there are a few . . . , by country/nation/region wiki articles. Maybe in the future, if warranted, it could be further subdivided into articles, by the primary-regional-classifications (eg Africa). Magpiepb (talk) 23:50, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
- OK @Magpiepb:, I'll fork it. --BoogaLouie (talk) 14:28, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
Forking article
[edit]To whom it may concern, a International propagation of Salafism and Wahhabism by country/region article has been created because the current article is too long. Have not yet eliminated the Influence by region/country section in the current article. --BoogaLouie (talk) 22:42, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

May 2021 title change and revert
[edit]One GrandAdmiralThrawn123 recently (16 May 2021) changed the title to International Salafi Missionary Activism. CambridgeBayWeather changed it back a couple of days later. Thank you CambridgeBayWeather.
The problem is that "propagation" is not the same as "missionary activism", the former involving financial incentives and in this case 75 billion dollars (in 2003 dollars) in spending. That's not really what people think of when they hear/read "missionary activism". --Louis P. Boog (talk) 16:46, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
