Proposed Transfers - Information on Congo Basin to Nile River Inter-BasinTransfer Proposals Needed

[edit]

Water availability in the Congo River Basin on a per capita basis is perhaps 150 times per capita water availability in Egypt, but diminishing rapidly (halved in the last quarter century)because of higher rates of population growth in the Congo. The two watersheds have a very long common boundary, the Congo-Nile Divide [Divide] lying along the edge of the catchment area for the White Nile system, which probably offers opportunities for inter-basin transfer schemes.

There has been talk of a Congo Basin to Nile basin water transfer, but details, especially of a quantitative and financial nature, are hard to come by.

Given the recent acute conflicts over Nile Waters allocation between Egypt and the upper riparian states, I think Wikipedia needs to solicit authoritative information on this proposed transfer scheme from FAO (which just completed a major resource database on the Nile, or other agency that can provide it. (See: FAONile Information Products page)

The project may or may not be linked to the now-halted Jonglei[Canal] Scheme (intended to enable the White Nile feeder tributaries to bypass the Sudd wetlands with their high evaporation losses. Despite this benefit, the scheme has been much criticized by experts for the ecological damage it would produce, and on political grounds for benefiting Egypt and Sudan, and shifting the environmental costs onto what is now South Sudan.

Could you please provide some links for the Congo Basin to Nile basin water transfer, who has been talking about it? Hilmar (talk) 15:53, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Atlanta

[edit]

I suspect Atlanta, Georgia transfers some water interbasin, given that the city itself is on both sides of the continental divide. Here are some links, if anyone is interested in researching it: [1] [2] [3]-- Beland (talk) 02:37, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
