Proposed move

[edit]

The current article title "State Institute of Canon Law of the dioceses in Germany" does not appear to be correct. The name of the institute is "Institut für Staatskirchenrecht der Diözesen Deutschlands" As I understand it:

  • Staatskircherecht is law enacted by the state (including constitutional provisions) regulating relations between church and state
  • Canon law (Kirchenrecht) is internal church law, enacted by a (Christian) church
  • "State institute" designates an institute of the state, but this is an institute of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany

So unless we can find an official translation, we have the following choices

  1. Use the official German name (which I would prefer).
  2. Create a better translation (since there are no reliable English sources, probably inadvisable); however such an explanatory translation could be used in the first sentence.
  3. Use a descriptive title (similar to the preceding but with different capitalization, probably inadvisable)

So I propose changing the article title to the German name "Institut für Staatskirchenrecht der Diözesen Deutschlands" --Boson (talk) 22:18, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Explanatory translation

[edit]

As an explanatory translation, how about "Institute for Church–State Relations of the Dioceses in Germany" --Boson (talk) 22:18, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PS: The current first sentence uses "ecclesiastical law", which is incorrect, as I understand it (see above).--Boson (talk) 22:29, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
