Comment
[edit]It would be interesting if someone had some explanation for why the term is "fly-tipping" as it is not obvious (at least to me) why that term was coined.
=
[edit]It may be called fly tipping as you are in effect, tipping the flies who swarm over the rubbish. This seems like a dictionary entry and not the stub of an encyclopedia entry.

- Ive always assumed it was because it was done "on the fly"The-Dixie-Flatline (talk) 19:26, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- The origin of the term is now explained in the article with the simple help of a dictionary. — O'Dea 17:42, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- Where is the explanation from a dictionary? The link to the start-page of the OED is not helpful and the Etymology section is a joke. ♆ CUSH ♆ 10:25, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Clarification
[edit]So this is not really a less exhausting form of cow-tipping then? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.144.86.143 (talk) 13:54, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]The articles are identical in their context and purpose. "dumping" describes the illegal act and "dump" the illegal result. They would be better of combined. -- Kku 13:18, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
Proposed Additions/Edits
[edit]I will be editing/adding to this page as part of a WikiEd course I am taking. I plan to elaborate on the effects of illegal dumping and write sections on illegal dumping laws/cases in Japan and the United States. I also plan to create a section regarding how illegal dumping can be combated.
Bibliography Here are some preliminary sources I will be using:

Request for comments- additions to article
[edit]Hi everyone! I am about to add some sections to this article. Your feedback would be very much appreciated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nuniw18 (talk • contribs) 01:47, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
'Illegal dumping'
[edit]Cant we just change the article to simpky refer to fly tipping? Illegal dumping sounds ridiculous. Thats a description and not a name. 2A00:23C7:5AD0:8F01:B5F:1578:6B3F:EC5B (talk) 02:32, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
Spelling consistency
[edit]As usual, a simple puzzle absorbed far more time than I expected.
On 2024 April 8, I created a section for US information, in the interest of globalisation. I noted discrepancies in spelling and looked at the article's history:
- IP user 143.158.254.228 created the article as Fly-tipping in 2005, calling the word British slang. (It was in print in 1947 but probably in use earlier.)
- In 2015 Cobaltcigs renamed the article to the "more dialect neutral" Illegal dumping. At that time the only subsection was for the UK and UK spelling was used.
- Nuniw18 contributed more than 60% of the content in 2018, adding many sections and specific mention of Italy, China, UK. The general narrative sections rely primarily on US sources (refs 7-21) especially the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Nuniw18 also introduced the US words tire, centers, trash, and -ize verb endings.
- On 2019 October 3, Socalilover changed most of the spelling to American, although there was no US section at the time (https://en.m.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Illegal_dumping&diff=919451329&diffonly=1)
- Some time in 2020 or later, someone changed kerbside to the American curbside, although the linked article is Kerbside collection.
- The images in the current version are identified as Commonwealth countries, with the exception of Ireland and Guam.
I wasn't able to identify any single revision as the "first non-stub version" but it seems clear the article was established with UK spelling. So it should have been retained. Consequently, I have returned spelling to UK style Humpster (talk) 05:27, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
