Ignacy Gelb urodził się w Tarnowie na Zabłociu, przy ulicy Gumniskiej 13. Był synem Pinkasa Salomona Gelba, urodzonego w Jadownikach Mokrych, podoficera (feldwebla) 57 pułku piechoty w Tarnowie oraz Rebeki Balsam, córki Sary i Szymona Islera. Dziadkowie ze strony ojca: Wolf Gelb i Chaja Taba Stein.
