THE SCHMIERANSKYTEAM

[edit]

At first let's speak about the terms "Schmieranski" (and "Schmieranski team": "Schmieranski" is a humorous but derogatory term used in Austria, especially in its capital Vienna, a nickname for newspaper journalists). Therefore, a "Schmieranski team" is a football team whose selection suggested by the newspaper journalists. It is clear that at that time, newspapers were the main medium – not alone in Austria, but in very many other countries (in Austria, the first radio broadcast was sent on April 1st, 1923, in the very beginning – you may say, "radio was still at the beginning". TV began on October 1st, 1955, but even in Germany it was introduced on Christmas Eve in 1951, in Italy on New Year’s Eve in 1954). Like in all other countries, journalists will always criticize team managers in order to force their own ideas about team selections.

Meisl, permanently appointed as bank clerk since 1905, was able to speak (besides German) perfectly English, Czech, Italian and French, and was fluent in Swedish, Spanish and Dutch as well. Therefore he has become an indispensable representative of the Austrian Football Federation to the FIFA in 1907. An anecdote -told again and again- is that in 1931, as the Manager of the Wunderteam, he created the so-called "Schmieranski Team". Even though there are voices that the anecdote may not be true; but basing on reports in present, high quality media you can take it that the story for sure.

It is told as following: Even though Mr. Meisl knew the genius player Mathias Sindelar, he didn't nominate him The journalists wanted the nomination of Sindelar for the international match vs Scotland, taking place in Vienna on May 16th, 1931. Meisl agreed after some verbal arguments, and (by getting angry), in a very well known Viennese coffeehouse, he threw a piece of paper to the journalists saying: " Do hobt's euer Schmiranskiteam" ("There is your Schmieranskiteam ").

The following is absolutely true: It is told that the "Schmieranskiteam" became the best in the world (at that time).

By the way, the match vs. Scotland was won 5-0 (at first time the Scots were defeated on the continent).

The journalists believed that they were not only critics but also football specialists but they had less influence than Mr. Meisl let(made) them think. There were a lot of tactical and psychological refinement in his (team)selections. The newspaper of that time, "Sport - Montag" (maybe translated as "Sport Monday"), once wrote enthusiastically: All were fascinated by the completely new style of this team, the speed of its wingers, the sporty elegance and overview of Sindelar, the somnambulistic reasoning of the whole team with the consequence that the victory was no real fight but was won just kicking at their best. 213.225.32.172 (talk) 12:12, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
