On 31 October 2023, it was proposed that this article be moved from Kidnappings during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war to 2023 Israel–Hamas war hostage crisis. The result of the discussion was moved.

Herzog

On October 15, in an interview with CNN, President Isaac Herzog revealed the document "The Captive Kidnapping Plan", found on the body of one of the terrorists, which details the instructions given to the terrorists on how to act when kidnapping the hostages. Among the trainings it is stated that the kidnappers must create chaos and intimidation through coercion and blindfolding of the captives, the use of electric shocks and the execution of any person who may pose a threat or distraction. The captors were also instructed to use the captives as cannon fodder if necessary. Also, in a method similar to the terrorist organization ISIS, the terrorists were required to record their actions live, and during the IDF attacks to execute the captives.

Two collectors and Elikim Liebman were considered kidnapped. It was announced that the remains of their bodies were found. Eliakim Liebman served as a security guard at the Nova party. After the murderous attack began, Liebman worked to save many from the nova. He assisted in evacuating the victims to the PAK area near which an ambulance was stationed with a medical team that treated the victims. Quite a few injured people were evacuated into the ambulance, some lying or sitting next to it. After the Hamas terrorists identified the ambulance and contrary to the art of combat, they fired an RPG missile at the ambulance. The ambulance was badly damaged and started to catch fire. The occupants of the ambulance as well as the victims who were lying nearby were hit by the rocket fire. Because of the severe damage to the ambulance, it was difficult to collect evidence of who was inside the ambulance and next to it. The process of identifying the victims in the ambulance and nearby was long and complex. For example, it was only after more than forty days that the body of Shani Gabai, who was buried in another grave, was located and identified. In May 2024, the remains of Liebman's body were found, buried with Victoria Gorlov, who she and her partner Alex Smoilov also served as security guards at the party and were murdered.

Treatment / drugs

In the section about drugs, something seems to have gone wrong. The Haaretz article doesn’t mention the identity of the drugs at all, only a single witness statement from a family member ("They were drugged"). The ToI article includes the Clonazepam info, but like this: "The ministry representative did not disclose whether the drugging had been confirmed by blood tests done on the released hostages at Israeli hospitals, from the freed hostages’ testimony, or both." Does anyone still know where the information came from that Clonazepam was confirmed through blood tests? DaWalda (talk) 15:37, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I added two sources that specifically relate to Clonazepam. Notice that one of the sources is in Hebrew (from ynet) and uses the common name in Israel קלונקס (Clonex) - which is just Clonazepam. GidiD (talk) 12:16, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Updates

The Ceasefire deal should be reflected in the timeline as well as the three hostages that were released today. I cannot because I believe there is extra protection on this article. Middle Mac CJM (talk) 20:47, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I also believe we should add the number of Palestinian prisoners that get released for each day that hostages are freed. This provides more context and clarifies that the freeing of the hostages as being part of a deal versus just being released. Middle Mac CJM (talk) 16:43, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oron Shaul

Oron Shaul's body was recovered before the ceasefire came into effect. As such, I'd suggest 2 changes to the article:

1. "Hamas will release 33 out of 98 hostages in the first phase" should potentially be changed to 97

2. In Background, "Hamas has also held the bodies of two slain Israeli soldiers, Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, since the 2014 Operation Protective Edge" should potentially be rewritten to clarify that it was accurate at the time of the attack Person568 (talk) 07:13, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the update with the information. Do we know if the 98 hostages anticipated for release included Oron Shaul? I didn't see any sources to show this was part of the count. Jurisdicta (talk) 22:02, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The numbers don't add up

This data is as of 27/01/2025: If Hamas abducted 251 people, and 124 of those were returned alive while 39 bodies were repatriated, then 251-124-39=88. But it says that 90 remain in captivity, with 3 hostages captured earlier, meaning that there are 87, not 88, October 7 hostages remaining in Gaza. Extended-confirmed-protected edit request on 28 January 2025

Partly done: Removed "Hamas" based on the Al-Quds article. But I also added a tag for failed verification since the two cited sources do not mention them. One refers to a video by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (of which Al-Quds is a part) and the other is silent on it. Would appreciate some other opinions on this. I have spotted two minor errors in the Timeline section. In the entry of 14 November 2023 the sentence 'Their bodies were recovered by the IDF on 15 December but the Israeli government not publicly reveal their existence or names until September 2024.' is missing the word 'did' between 'Israeli government' and 'not publicly reveal'. The second error is a few entries later, where the date of the ceasefire should be changed from '4–30 November 2023' into '24–30 November 2023'. This section is incorrect and biased.

the definition of “children” is people between infancy and puberty. Between 99% and 100% of the young people in Israeli custody are 16-18 years old.
