Merge

[edit]

I proposed the merge because it's confusing that there are two articles which both seem to be claiming to be the main article on the topic. e.g. Gauss sums (plural) redirects to Gaussian period rather than Gauss sum (singular). -- 140.142.20.229 (talk) 22:06, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Browsing through the book of Berndt, Evans and Williams I'm left with the impression that Gauss sums and periods really are two different things—a Gauss sum is a sum over all the pth roots of unity, whereas a period is a sum over a certain subset—but this isn't clearly spelled out in the book, and really isn't clear from the Gaussian periods article. If my guess is correct, then a merge isn't appropriate; rather, the article on periods needs to be clarified. Jowa fan (talk) 01:14, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
