Title change

[edit]

I named this article "Thailand fisheries" after much deliberation. The major statistical bodies, FAO, World Bank, et al., include recreational fishing and subsistence fishing in their analyses. " "Fishing industry in Thailand" refers to the majority, but not all of Thai fisheries. "Fishing in Thailand" is equally unsatifactory as it makes it sound purely recreational. And aquaculture does not comport with "Fishing in Thailand". Before making significant changes, please discuss here. Seligne (talk) 14:46, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Thailand fisheries" doesn't work well because fisheries most often refers to specific bodies of water where fish are caught or raised, rather than the overall economic activity. The FAO sources cited in the article also appear to consider fisheries to exclude aquaculture. Recreational fishing doesn't appear to be part of the focus of this article; even if its numbers are included in analyses, it would be pretty insignificant compared to the commercial sector. I think Fishing industry in Thailand works best as the article title, given the limitations. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:50, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but not quite correct...
A. Meaning of "fishery": "Fishery" describes a good deal more than just a venue for fishing. The FAO defines "fishery" as "...an activity leading to harvesting of fish. It may involve capture of wild fish or raising of fish through aquaculture." The NOAA Glossary of Fishing defines it as "Fishery: 1. Generally, a fishery is an activity leading to harvesting of fish. It may involve capture of wild fish or raising of fish through aquaculture;..." See article Fishery as well.
B. Recreational fishing is a relatively minor part of Thai fisheries if we are talking wild capture, so was deferred till later. The article, not being cast in concrete, will no doubt evolve to include all fisheries sub-sectors.
"Fishing industry" conjures up images of trawlers and canning factories. In my view it makes for a poor title as it does not immediately evoke thoughts of subsistence fishers casting a net from a bank on the Mekong or the Chao Le drying squid on an Andaman beach or the ubiquity of recreational fishing (Google "fishing in Thailand"), etc.
My knickers are not in a twist over a title, but I think in general the WP constabulary may sometimes be a tad too keen to overrule, even when odds are they know less about the article's subject than its well-intentioned author. Seligne (talk) 06:06, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking more about what the term means to the layperson than the technical definition. But you do make valid points. You could go ahead and move the article back. Editors who think otherwise can start a full RM discussion, which might attract more input. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:19, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
