question

[edit]

I'd like to see some documentation supporting the assertion that the strike was primarily or significantly about Nazi persecution of the Jews. Posters, leaflets, diary entries, police records, transcripts of speeches, signs, specific actions taken at sites relevant to the Jews - any of these would be useful. Notes

[edit]

An earlier strike was considered in November '40 by students in response to the termination the jobs of Jewish civil servants, but not executed. Students of Leiden and Delft (?) did strike. (Sijes, p. 15)

Missing: Hendrik Sneevliet

[edit]

It is unfortunate that this article does not mention the role of the anti-Stalinist Hendrik Sneevliet in the February strike. He was captured and executed by the Germans soon after it. The role of his group is documented at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. The strike was specifically a protest against a deportation order aimed at Jews.

Sneevliet led the Dutch transport union in which the dockworkers were included. He is mentioned in my long text on Communism and Islam at www.islamicpluralism.org because of his role as a founder of the Communist Party of Indonesia, from the ranks of the Social Democrats of the Dutch colonies. But I know that is considered an insufficient citation and I will try to find something more suitable.

Sneevliet was targeted by the NKVD for assassination in the 1930s but the crime did not take place. There are now a suburban ring road and a metro station in Amsterdam named for him. In February 1941 the Stalin-Hitler Pact was in effect and I have doubts about the involvement of the Dutch CP in the strike.

I decided to sign up to contribute to Wikipedia but will not create a user page immediately because I have been a topic of so much controversy.
