Fagopyrum or Гречиха in Russian. This is authentic and purely Russian buckwheat. Botanical motherland of Fagopyrum is Southern Siberia and Altaj. From there it spread to Ural. It was developed in Russia for over 2000 years and from XV cetnury started to spread in West Europe and after that Worldwide. Quite interesting that in Russia it was called Greek, because at the beginning in Kiev and Vladimir Russ it was cultivated in monasteries by Greek monks. But in Siberia Grechka were cultivated for centuries before them. Grechka (Fagopyrum) was main food for Russians for centuries and one of the most popular Kasha (porridge)today. Very good article in Russian Language available at: http://vkus.narod.ru/raznoe/grechiha.htm
